About The Black Bull at Midgley

The Black Bull at Midgley is a restaurant in Wakefield on Bar Ln, with a 120-seat dining room and a locals bar where open fires keep one corner of the bar area by the TV. Drinks are ordered at the bar, and tables in the separate restaurant area can be booked. The menu pairs a specials board and smaller plates with a burger board for two, served with onion rings and chips. The pie of the day comes with homemade chips, and pizza is on the menu too. Sandwich deals and a coffee and cake deal give the kitchen a lighter side. A private dining area gives groups a space of their own.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints are mostly about service and kitchen delays. Two reviewers waited around an hour for food even when the pub was quiet, and another waited 40 minutes for two meals. Dishes arrived wrong or poor: solid, cold poached eggs and burnt sausages at breakfast, undercooked chips and onion rings, and a pizza topped with Branston pickle instead of red onion chutney. Complaints were met with partial discounts or a refund, and two reviewers felt no apology came. One Sunday roast diner found the plates cold and light on meat, and another was told the kitchen had closed at 7:38pm while waiting for a pudding to take home.

“Horrible experience. Waited 40 mins for 2 meals. Toad in the hole that tasted better than it looked. Also ordered halloumi and red onion chutney pizza. It came without the chutney, they waitress went to fetch some, put it on my pizza only to realise it was Branston pickle!! Made the pizza totally inedible. Offered to replace it but didn't fancy waiting another 40 mins. They did refund the cost of my meal but our night was totally ruined. Will not be returning.”

“Food took nearly an hour to arrive, and that was after we chased it, despite the pub being fairly quiet. When the food eventually came, it was really disappointing. The chips and onion rings were undercooked and overall the three meals were poor. What made the experience much worse was how the complaint was handled. When we spoke to Sharon, the supervisor, about how long we’d waited, rather than apologising she looked at the receipt and simply said she could see we’d waited a long time. She then blamed other members of staff for not apologising instead of actually apologising herself. She disappeared to collect more undercooked chips, despite us saying we didn’t want replacement chips in the first place. I then had to chase her to explain that we didn’t want any more chips and wanted the actual complaint dealt with. Eventually she offered 10% off the bill for three really poor meals. She also commented to my partner that she’d eaten most of her meal, despite her having not touched the chips and onion rings. It came across as rude and dismissive rather than an attempt to resolve a genuine complaint. Really disappointing. Bad food can happen, but the way a complaint is dealt with makes all the difference. Unfortunately, the way this was handled made an already poor meal considerably worse. Eventually two meals were knocked off the bill but there still no apology and the experience was already ruined. We won’t be returning and couldn’t recommend this place.”

“My husband, son and I came this evening for a meal in the restaurant. It was quiet at 7pm but I think the weather temperature had a lot to do with it. The starters and main courses were lovely we all enjoyed the food and were served quickly. Couldn't manage deserts, perhaps next time. we've been a few times before and found it all great every time. Feeling sorry for those who work in restaurants in this heat but at the Black Bull the service was first class.”

“Had two exceptional meals here over the weekend, in large part down to Vicky’s outstanding service. Sandwich deals are top notch and incredible value - and the same can be said for the 2 x burger board (with massive onion rings and a hearty portion of chips.) Cannot overstate how much our expectations were exceeded by this place!”
