About The Star on the Hill
The Star on the Hill is a free house pub in Usk, on Tor-Y-Mynydd, set high above Llansoy with views across the surrounding countryside. Those views reach the car park, which looks out at sunset. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast and changes its daily specials, with sea bass among them. On the drinks side, the pub pours the local ale Butty Bach. Because it works as a free house, the bar gives walkers and drivers climbing up from the village a place to stop for a meal or a pint. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Food is what most reviewers praise, with the pizza, the steak, the Sunday roast and the daily special of sea bass all singled out as well cooked and generous. Close behind is the friendly staff, described as welcoming and attentive, with one family noting good recommendations for ales and desserts. A local ale called Butty Bach and the toffee pudding get specific mentions, and several call the drinks and meals reasonably priced. Parents note the children's options suited picky eaters. The criticism is mixed. One diner found the garlic bread charred, the Pepsi flat and the chips not homemade, while another found the building cold inside and wished every fire were lit. A third says the pub still looks closed from outside because of a faded sign. Several mention the countryside views from the outside tables and car park, including at sunset, and one suggests booking because the pub is popular.

“What a great find. An excellent pub!Food and drink were outstanding and a really warm welcome from the lady on the bar who was outstanding. Best chips I've had for years. Perfect. Compliments to the chef too. 10/10”

“We found this place by pure luck. We followed GPS as the M4 was congested and we ended up in this nice restaurant/bar. We had Sunday roast and it was delicious. The location is in the middle of nowhere but it was worth stopping there for our lunch. 100% recommend this place.”

“Popped in to the fairly newly reopened Star after not being able to eat at our first choice of pub. Wasn't disappointed, food was lovely and a generous portions. Sat outside as it had been the hottest day of the year, with a lovely breeze and fabulous view. Would definitely recommend.”

“Went on a Saturday night. Views from carpark when sun was setting were fabulous. 4 adults plus dog. Very friendly staff and great service. Food was very good too, very tasty.Good selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks available. Prices are extremely reasonable too. Would recommend booking though, as The Star is popular. Would recommend a visit and we'll definitely be going back.”
