Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is what reviewers return to, with the fish described as fresh and massive under crispy batter, and the chips as hot and crispy. Portions are repeatedly called big, and one group of four shared chips and only needed two extra pieces of fish. Close behind is the friendly service, with several praising the staff and one noting generous salt and vinegar. A battered sausage and chips went down well with one family, and one visitor mentions scraps thrown in free and outside seating with no extra charge. Diners also describe a traditional cafe with sliced bread and a pot of tea, plus a restaurant upstairs, and ice cream is mentioned. The main complaints are mixed. One long-time customer of over 40 years says quality has declined, reporting a fishcake with no fish between the potato slices and mushy peas they believe are now tinned. Another found a bit too much batter and little seating inside. One reviewer's dog was brought a bowl of fresh cool water without asking, and the table was moved into the shade.

“For me and my family these are the best fish and chips in Yorkshire! This is a traditional cafe that serves fish and chips with sliced bread and (if you want) a pot of tea. The staff are really friendly. We just wish we lived closer so we could visit more often!”

“After 49 years on this planet, I can honestly say I’ve finally found the best chippy ever! Why can’t you be closer to me? 😀 Absolutely worth every mile. I had the fish and chips, and they were cooked to perfection – beautiful fish, crispy batter, and some of the best chips I’ve ever had. My son had the battered sausage and chips, and he absolutely loved them too. To top it all off, the owner very kindly donated to our 160-mile charity bike ride in aid of the Bradley Lowery Foundation. That generosity and support meant so much to us and shows what a fantastic local business this is. Amazing food, brilliant service, and genuinely lovely people. If you’re anywhere nearby, do yourself a favour and pay them a visit. I know I’ll be back whenever I’m in the area – I just wish they were on my doorstep!”

“Stopped by for a bag of chips and a sausage for our dog Archie. Impeccable service, offered us a table outside and moved it into the shade for the dog. Then brought out a bowl and filled it will fresh cool water, for the dog, without having to ask. Proper tasty Chip shop Chips, sitting in the sunshine. Lovely!”

“Wanted a fish and chip shop before the races at Thirsk today and this was the closest. Fish and Chips is a bargain at 12 quid and scraps thrown in for free, I don't get this down south. Chips hot and fresh, fish massive with crispy batter. Outside eating area no extra charge. Possibly the best fish and chips I've had and all served with Yorkshire warmth.”

“Great fish and chips and lovely spot outside to sit and eat it. Staff were very friendly and more importantly the food was smashing. Shame we're not staying longer as I would definitely be going back.”
