About The Jewel in the Crown
The Jewel in the Crown is an Indian restaurant at 14-16 Victoria Rd in Swindon, set in a curry house with a large chandelier and an ornate plaster ceiling. The dining room is spacious, with plenty of room between tables, which suits groups sharing several dishes. The tandoor turns out chicken shashlik and naan, and the menu also lists a mixed starter and tandoori dishes. Lamb house specials include lamb karai, along with a pumpkin curry and dhansak. Dishes arrive in traditional pots or serving dishes, and a hot plate at the table keeps them warm while you eat. Some dishes come with complimentary rice. The owner or manager also comes around the tables to chat with diners.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the tandoor cooking, praising the chicken shashlik and tandoori alongside naan that several say came fresh from the oven. Close behind are the curries, with reviewers naming the chicken tikka biryani, lamb karai, dhansak, chicken patia and a special lamb and pumpkin curry, often described as tender and well spiced. Generous portions come up repeatedly, and dishes arrive in traditional pots kept warm at the table. Many mention friendly staff, with the manager or owner stopping to chat after the meal, and a few call the room spacious with plenty of space between tables. Several describe the prices as affordable. The main complaint comes from one reviewer who ordered ten dishes and found four overly salty, which spoilt the meal, and also thought the rice portion stingy and the older man's welcome lingering. Another visitor was given a free shot of Baileys at the end.

“The older guy is trying to be welcoming but he's leery n lingering. We ordered 10 dishes and 4 were overly salty which spoilt the rest of the meal. Portions were good in the main, rice was a bit stingy. Happy to leave quickly”

“Excellent food. By far the best Indian restaurant in Swindon. I'd recommend the special Lamb and Pumpkin curry, as well as the Dhansak and Bhindi Baji. Takeaways are very efficient and reasonably priced.”

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Review: Jewel in the Crown, Swindon What a fantastic surprise — and a true jewel indeed! 💎 I walked in as Mike from Lonely Traveler Productions, not knowing quite what to expect — and I was absolutely blown away from the moment I stepped through the doors. First thing that hits you? The sheer size of this place! 🤩 It’s so much bigger than you’d imagine from the outside — spacious, grand, and beautifully laid out with plenty of room between tables, yet still warm and welcoming. You really don’t expect a restaurant of this scale right here in Swindon — it’s impressive! The menu is incredible — such a huge range of authentic Indian dishes, all freshly made and packed with flavour. Whether you love classic curries, tandoori specials, or something a little different, they do it all — and they do it beautifully. The spices were perfectly balanced, the meat tender, and the portions generous — exactly what you want from a proper Indian meal. 🍛 Service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive, the atmosphere was lovely — lively but not noisy, perfect for a relaxed evening. They’ve got everything you could ask for: great food, great space, great service, and a team that really cares about what they do. I absolutely loved my visit here — easily one of the best Indian restaurants I’ve been to in a long time. If you’re in Swindon, this place is an absolute must-visit! ✅”

“I do not know how they do it, third time coming here because the absolute flavour bombs are immaculate, they use their seasonings and 39 years of business recipes to absolute perfection, very affordable too!!”

“The best curry house in Swindon by far. Delicious taste and also great spice. The staff are very friendly and funny. They always entertain and are also timely and helpful. Aziz is one of the most welcoming servers I've ever had and his cheerful demeanour always brings us back. Great for a family outing or a lads curry night too. Don't miss out and come here!”
