About Libby's Bread & Wine

Libby's Bread & Wine is a restaurant, bakery, cafe and bar on Town St in Stockport, with upstairs seating and a roof terrace by the River Goyt. By day it works as a bakery-cafe, with pastries on display and a morning menu that includes a full breakfast and egg and crispy bacon on ciabatta. In the evening the format shifts to tapas-style small plates, with vegan and vegetarian options. Fresh bread comes in a bread basket with oils and dips. The doors are open daily, though the Sunday menu is limited. Tables can be booked, and busy times bring a wait for a table. A private dining room is available for groups, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers praise the riverside setting, the roof terrace and the coffee, with the fresh bread and cakes also singled out by those who enjoyed their meals, though the pastries are often reported as nearly sold out. Service and kitchen reliability draw the most complaints. Many describe menu items running out, including bacon, hash browns, sausages, steak, fish, polenta chips and cake, and several say they were told only after a long wait. Waits of 40 minutes to an hour for breakfast are reported, with some bills reduced as an apology. Reviewers also mention slow or unfriendly table service, a booked table not honoured, and one group seated behind a later arrival after being told to wait. One reviewer reports finding a short hair in both food and a drink on separate visits, and another describes a chef wiping hands and plates with a dirty rag. Others say the staff were friendly and hard-working, and one notes a clear improvement and fantastic scrambled eggs. Some found the food expensive for what it was, and one reviewer was given a complimentary bread basket with oils and dips while waiting.

“Came into Libby’s last Thursday for a bite to eat. Our server Cassie was great and made sure me and my family were taken care of. Overall, a great atmosphere and lovely staff. 10/10 will be coming again.”

“Beautifully located, this is a lovely spot and the chef's clearly know what they’re doing, the food was delicious. There was also a small selection of pastries on display that looked fantastic, although we didn’t try them. Unfortunately, the service was a real let down. We received a friendly welcome, but then stood awkwardly for quite some time waiting to be seated, despite there being several empty tables. From there, the service was unusually slow. Our food sat on the hot pass for so long that the chef had to ring the bell at least twice to get someone’s attention. At several points, the waitress' walked straight past the plates and I was genuinely tempted to go and collect them myself. There were other signs that the service was struggling too. A gentleman came in and placed his order twice, but eventually left without being served, seemingly without the staff noticing. Another table had to get up and prompt the staff to bring out their order. It’s a real shame, as I’ve visited before and had such a lovely experience. The food is good and the location is beautiful, but unfortunately the service on this occasion was very disappointing.”

“I’ve been to this restaurant many times, but unfortunately my last two visits, only about two weeks apart, were very disappointing. On both occasions I found a short hair in what I was served, once in my food and once in my drink. When I asked for the drink to be replaced, I’m not completely sure it actually was, as it seemed like the hair may have simply been removed. I also noticed two male chefs preparing food without hair coverings, they weren’t wearing beard covers either. Both hairs I found were short, which made the lack of hair/beard coverings particularly concerning. Finding a hair once can happen, but experiencing the same hygiene issue twice within two weeks is unacceptable, especially from a restaurant I’ve visited many times before. I really hope they take hygiene standards more seriously.”
