About The Mill at Botley

The Mill at Botley is a modern British restaurant on Botley Mills in Southampton, set in a restored mill building with original machinery placed around the dining rooms, some of it strung with lights. It has three dining rooms, including a private dining room that holds 18 for groups. The kitchen cooks lunches, dinners and roasts from locally sourced ingredients, with a Steak & ale pie and Sticky toffee pudding on the menu. Several dishes are gluten free. The wine list includes an English sparkling Cuvée from Wickham Estate, and a bar area is there for guests waiting for their table. Reservations are required. The car park is paid, and the team asks guests to pay beforehand.

Customer Review Summary

Pies lead the praise at this converted mill, with one diner calling the pie of the day stacked with tender meat and the star of the meal, and another group ordering the steak and ale pie. Sticky toffee pudding is named twice for dessert, alongside a rhubarb crème brûlée, a warm chocolate brownie, arancini with a sauce one reviewer loved, battered cod, and a vegetable risotto too substantial to finish. Reviewers describe friendly, welcoming service, good portion sizes, plentiful gluten free options, Guinness Zero on offer, and old original machinery dotted around the dining rooms, covered in lights. Several came with Groupon vouchers and felt the food was good value. The main criticism comes from one diner who found the food mediocre for the price and was put off when the manager spoke loudly and abruptly to a solo diner who questioned the car park charge, which was eventually removed. Another reviewer advises paying for parking beforehand. One couple were greeted with a complimentary glass of prosecco and a signed card marking their wedding anniversary.

“Today, we thought we would try the Mill at Botley in Hampshire. Table for 2 we both had the same starter - Arancini , I loved the sauce! For the main, I chose the Battered Cod, Peas 🫛 & Chips 😋 My companion chose the Vegetable Risotto. However this portion was too substantial to finish. Luckily we both found some extra space to enjoy dessert, Warm Chocolate Brownie with Chocolate Cherry Sauce & clotted cream ice cream, the finishing touch was the white chocolate pencil and sprig of mint. 😊 Along with a Sticky Toffee Pudding very Yummy 😋 Would I recommend, absolutely! Thanks to the team.😊”

“Unfortunately, a very disappointing experience. The meal itself was nothing special and, for the price, we found the food quite mediocre. What really spoiled the evening, though, was the way the manager spoke to an elderly gentleman who was sitting near us on his own. When his bill arrived, he politely questioned the car park charge. The manager responded very loudly and abruptly, to the point that we could hear the whole conversation from our table. He eventually agreed to remove the charge, but I felt incredibly sorry for the gentleman, who was put in a very uncomfortable and embarrassing position. There was absolutely no need for the situation to be handled in that manner, particularly in front of other diners. It was unpleasant to witness and completely changed how we felt about the restaurant. I do want to say that the waitresses were lovely — polite, friendly and welcoming. Sadly, the manager’s behaviour and the mediocre food mean we wouldn’t choose to return.”

“Upon arrival staff were very welcoming and explained about the paid parking in case we hadn’t paid. It was a very good atmosphere straightaway due to the sight of the old original machines dotted around covered in lights. We didn’t have to wait too long for drinks to arrive and the food was excellent. All in all a very nice experience, highly recommended Thank you very much. Chrisdee”

“What a wonderful time. The food was truly spectacular, perfectly cooked, nicely presented. The service was excellent. Nothing too much trouble. The atmosphere was delightful too. It was really special. Thank you so much. We will be back to celebrate something else soon.”

“Friendly, warm and professional welcome. Excellent service, excellent food. We appreciated the availability of Guinness Zero! We were using Groupon vouchers so even better value food! A delightfully restored and presented mill. The ladies toilet was particularly interesting, especially the sound effects! Apparently the theme in the men’s toilet is James Bond! Would definitely return if in the area.”
