About Basti Restaurant & Catering

Diners at Basti Restaurant and Catering, a restaurant on Staniforth Road in Sheffield, can eat in the men's seating or in a separate family hall, which gives families their own segregated space for the meal. The kitchen cooks across chicken and lamb, with chicken karahi and lamb handi among the curries, and spice level is settled at ordering, when the team talks through flavours and how hot a dish should come. Drinks stay non-alcoholic, from mango lassi to Desi tea and mocktails. Staff run table service, attending tables through the meal rather than leaving orders at a counter. Tables are taken on a walk-in basis with no booking, and the restaurant opens daily in the evenings only. Drivers can leave the car on site, since the premises has its own parking. The site has traded under several different names over the years and now runs under this one.

Customer Review Summary

Lamb dishes draw the most praise at this Sheffield restaurant, with reviewers singling out the lamb chops, lamb Angara curry, lamb handi and lamb shank. Close behind are the chicken karahi and chicken malai boti, the latter described as flavorful and perfectly cooked, along with a mixed grill. Mocktails and a mango lassi also earn mentions, as does a generous portion of kheer. Many reviewers value the segregated family area and describe the service as friendly, welcoming and helpful with advice on flavours and spice. Prices and portions are called reasonable, and the interior is described as clean, calm and relaxing. The criticism is milder but specific. One reviewer found the food bland and dry, with chunky lamb and chicken pieces, and the Desi tea took ages to arrive. The same reviewer noted that the entrance door does not close properly, leaving the first table cold, and that the car park has many potholes. Another suggests ordering the karai a bit spicier. One diner returned to dine in a second time because the food was that good.

“Visited this place for the first time in May 2026. It has changed names many times over the years and I have been to the premises many times. The restaurant has a medium size car park, lots of pot holes as you drive into the car park. The restaurant is segregated for families and males. The food is ok, we asked for medium spices and it was served as expected. The restaurant would benefit from some mood music as otherwise you have multiple conversations happening. Also the entrance door needs adjustment as when customers walk in, it doesn’t close meaning the first table is very cold. The food was ok, lamb was a bit chunky, could have been smaller pieces, same for the chicken, the chana dhaal and pilau rice was ok, as was the keema. Would have preferred a bit more taste in the dishes as they felt quite bland and dry. Mango lassi was very nice. Toilets clean. Overall 4 stars and will try again. The service was very good, Anisa looked after our table and gave great service. Also the kheer was a good portion and the Desi tea was nice, but took ages to come. Good customer service and nice clean place.”
