About Bells Fish and Chips
Bells Fish and Chips is a fish restaurant on North Terrace in Seaham, open daily. The decor centres on the local mining industry, with pictures of miners inside and a mining statue outside the front door, so the place tells its own story before you sit down. The menu is built around fish and chips, with haddock and cod both listed, and local Whitby scampi is also on it. A prawn cocktail is available as a starter. Diners can swap chips for salad or split the plate half salad and half chips. The restaurant and the takeaway are attached, each with its own entrance.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips, especially haddock and cod, draw the most praise, with reviewers describing a crispy coating, fresh fish and a generous portion. Close behind is the choice of half salad and half chips, which two reviewers single out, along with the prawn cocktail, onion rings, curry sauce and a cheese patty. Staff are often called friendly, and one coeliac diner describes a server checking the kitchen for safe options and returning to confirm. Reviewers also mention clean toilets, crayons and a colouring book for children, and mining-themed decor with a statue outside. The sharpest criticism comes from one detailed review: a large fish that was mostly batter around a small piece, bitty chips, dry haddock, wings sold as Thai honey that turned out to be sweet chilli sauce, and drinks given to another table with a laugh. That reviewer also waited over fifteen minutes for the bill while staff chatted by the kitchen, and found the miner picture in the disabled toilet uncomfortable. Another noted the haddock arrived in two pieces, and the bill came with two mints on a small dish.

“Probably the best fish and chip restaurant i have experienced, the service was impeccable, fabulous hostess and the service was prompt and quite quick considering everything was freshly cooked to order. The cleanest restaurant toilets i have ever seen, the staff tke enormous pride in ensuring every aspect of your visit is a pleasant experience. The menu featured local Whitby scampi and i could not resist being up in North Yorkshire, the half half salad and chips was a real pleasure to see as often too much chips can ruin a meal but this was a great option. Next time i am up, i will 100% be coming back 😊”

“We visited this restaurant for fish and chips and had a lovely family meal. The takeaway and restaurant have separate entrances, and we accidentally walked into the takeaway. we were seated quickly. It wasn't too busy, and we liked the modern décor. The toilets were also clean and well maintained. We ordered two portions of fish and chips and a combo platter to share. The food took a little longer than expected to arrive, possibly because of the combo platter, but we weren't in a rush, so it wasn't an issue. The food was excellent. The fish was beautifully cooked with a crispy coating, and everything tasted fresh and delicious. I was particularly impressed that you can choose salad instead of chips, or even have half salad and half chips, which is a great healthier option. The service was good throughout our visit. The staff checked back to make sure everything was okay and that we had everything we needed. Most importantly, my kids really enjoyed themselves. They were given crayons and a colouring book, which kept them entertained while waiting for the food. Overall, we had a great experience and thoroughly enjoyed our meal.”

“You can't go wrong with Bells in Seaham for a proper feed. I went for the fish bites and a sausage, and it was spot on—none of that soggy rubbish, just fresh fish and a decent, meaty banger. The chips were bang out of order in the best way, proper fluffy and perfect for dunking into a tub of their curry sauce, which had a cracking bit of spice to it. It’s a clean, smart spot but it hasn't lost its soul—just good, honest bait that fills a hole without breaking the bank. Proper job.”
