Quick info
About Landgate Bistro
Landgate Bistro is a bistro in Rye, at 5/6 Landgate, serving British food with a classic or modern slant. The chef grows and pickles his own produce and makes his own chutneys, which are displayed around the restaurant, so the kitchen's preserving work is on view as well as on the plate. The menu draws on local marsh lamb and pork, and on fish landed a few hundred meters from the door. Scallops come as a starter, with venison and lemon sole among the mains. A complimentary amuse bouche is served before the meal. The bistro is open Wednesday to Saturday, evenings only, and closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Customer Review Summary
The criticism is detailed. One reviewer describes a main arriving an hour late, a potato roll that seemed defrosted and cold in the centre, a returned plate with most sides removed, and a chocolate sorbet like frozen instant whip. A return visit brought an hour and a half between starter and main, with fish-based amuse bouche served to a table with a vegetarian. Others call the coffee not good, the bread portion smaller than before, and the dining area and bathrooms in need of some care.

“Full marks - the food was brilliant, service attentive but relaxed, restaurant was lovely and best of all we were given all the time we liked on the table. Thank you”

“What a wonderful little Bistro. Amazing food, excellent service and lovely decor. Toilets were very clean. I particularly loved that the food is locally sourced and the chef grows and pickles his own produce and makes his own chutneys which you can see displayed around the restaurant.”

“I used to love going to this restaurant but not anymore. The food, once exceptional, is now mediocre to say the least. The service is very slow. I had a very disappointing meal there about 2 months ago. The starter was ok and the once brilliant focaccia bread was not as brilliant as it used to be. The main course was delivered an hour later and mine had very obviously been defrosted and not quite warmed up in the centre. It was the potato roll with a variety of sides. I sent it back to be re-heated and when it was returned most of the accompanying sides had been removed and the plate was a mess. I didn’t eat it as it looked like someone’s leftovers. I ordered a chocolate sorbet for dessert. This was also inedible as it was like frozen instant whip, not like a sorbet at all. I put this all down to the restaurant maybe having a bad day in some way. I returned recently and despite arriving quite early before the restaurant filled up, the service was still slow. Only one of our party had a starter but it as an hour and a half before the main course was delivered. The menu hadn’t changed much since my previous visit. I had an asparagus based dish which was rather underwhelming. Again it was partly cold and the eggs were overcooked - hard. I ate it but there were no interesting flavours and I wondered about the asparagus sourcing. Locally we have farms selling wonderful asparagus now at this time if the year. This was not that asparagus. The focaccia bread was chewy, maybe defrosted rather than freshly made. The complimentary amuse bouche were fish based and delivered without asking about dietary preferences - one of our party is veggie. In all the service, although friendly, was very, very slow and food not impressive.”

“Fantastic food. The staff were delightful and provided us with complimentary bread and an amuse Bouche. We had a starter, main and drinks and were very pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the bill was. Highly recommend this great little bistro and will definitely be returning”

“Awesome food, amazing service. A little pricey, but you pay for what you get. The dining area and bathrooms could take a little t.l.c. but did not detract from what was a special meal.”

Highlights
“We make British food with a classic or modern slant and source our ingredients from the local fields, woodlands and waters. We use free range eggs, milk and cream from farms up the road. We serve a selection of local marsh lamb and pork, and fresh fish is landed a few hundred meters from us (the gurnard, which tail is on our sign, was caught in Rye Bay). We are proud to say that The Good Food Guide ranks us as the best restaurant in Rye for the sixth, consecutive year. We have also been recommended twice in the new guide Where Chefs Eat. Only 40 restaurants outside London are listed, and we are the only one in Sussex.”
