Quick info
About Hoof - Rye
Hoof - Rye is a country food restaurant at 35 The Mint in Rye, founded by a local farm that still supplies its award-winning beef and potatoes. That farm link shapes the menu, which includes a burger with double smash patties on a brioche bun, served with fries and tomato relish. Steaks, including ribeye, come with peppercorn sauce and fries, and a brownie rounds out the dessert side. The dining room has wooden furniture, low lighting and beams across the ceiling, and an upstairs seating area gives a second space to sit. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Steaks draw the most praise, with sirloin and ribeye described as perfectly cooked and tasty, and the peppercorn sauce called delicious with the fries. Burgers split opinion. One diner enjoyed double smash patties with crispy edges and a sweet, slightly spicy tomato relish that stole the show, while two others found the burger bland, the bread stale and breaking apart, and the fries very soft. The bavette steak also drew a complaint, described as flavourless and chewy, with bland tomatoes and mushrooms that could be cooked more slowly. Diners also single out the belly pork, the halloumi, the banoffee coupe, a Romney Bohemian lager and a cocktail. Several came to celebrate wedding anniversaries and describe friendly, attentive staff, and one suggests going upstairs for quieter seating. At one table, a partner's birthday was never mentioned, yet a brownie with ice cream, fruit and a candle arrived anyway.

“Great place, staff were lovely. We had sirloin steaks which were perfectly done...medium rare . As an extra, it was my partners's birthday. I had not mentioned anything but clearly it was overheard. We were presented a delicious brownie with ice-cream and fruit and candle on top. fantastic service and food.,with an eye to detail”

“We had an absolutely wonderful experience at Hoof in Rye celebrating our first wedding anniversary! ❤️🥂 From the moment we arrived, the service was fantastic. A special shout-out to Kia, who was absolutely amazing — friendly, attentive and made us feel so welcome throughout the evening. Nothing was too much trouble, and Kia really helped make our anniversary celebration extra special. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was lovely, and the service was exceptional. It was the perfect place to celebrate such a special milestone. 💕✨ Thank you to the whole team at Hoof in Rye, and especially Kia, for making our first anniversary one to remember. We will definitely be back! 🥂❤️”

“Beautiful lunch in a very cosy, friendly, clean, restaurant. Service excellent, food was very good, and atmosphere very relaxing. Tip: Go upstairs for some quieter seating. Tip2: Walk up the hill for some lovely dessert shops.”

“We visited on Father’s Day and we thought the service was great and the food was absolutely delicious. The belly pork was tasty. The halloumi was light and fluffy. The peppercorn gravy was delicious. The brownie was perfect. My cocktail was also a treat.”

“While looking for places to visit for my recent trip to Rye, Hoof kept popping up on my searches, as a big burger fan I decided this would be my lunch. Inside there is a rustic chilled vibe, with low lighting and wooden furniture, with beams across the ceiling. You could easily imagine this being a wealthy merchant's living room hundred of years ago. There was a good drinks selection, I went for a Romney Bohemian lager, not one I had had before and very crisp and refreshing! My partner had a vanilla milkshake topped with squirty cream. We had the same burger which was double smash patties, tomato, pickled cucumber, and cheese, in a brioche bun, served with fries, and a tomato relish. The burger was tasty and the patties had those crispy edges that make smash burgers so good. The tomato relish though was something I didn't expect to steal the show, not like ketchup at all, but sweet and a little spicy, I didn't leave any left as it was so good! Service was excellent too, and we didn't wait long for anything at all!”

“At The Hoof, we warmly welcome everyone, creating a relaxed and enjoyable experience where great food and genuine hospitality go hand in hand. Inspired by a move away from formulaic dining, The Hoof was originally founded by a local farm with a simple vision: to serve first-class food in an unpretentious, welcoming setting. That vision still shapes everything we do today. We remain closely connected to our roots, proudly continuing to use the farm’s award-winning beef and potatoes—ingredients we know and trust, grown and reared just a few miles away.
