Quick info
About Flaxmoss Chippy
Alongside the fish and chips, Flaxmoss Chippy also serves Chinese food, making it a two-menu takeaway on Helmshore Rd in Rossendale. Fish and chips are fried fresh while you wait, and the batter comes out light and crisp, with cod and chips a regularly ordered plate. Chips are sold by the portion, including chip muffins, and portions run generous. Other orders across the counter include Pie and Chips with Curry Sauce, Sausage and Chips, and Fish & Chips with Curry Sauce. Payment is cash only, so it pays to arrive prepared, and there is no booking, orders are placed at the counter as a walk-in. A queue is usual, though the team works through it quickly and methodically. Plastic shields sit at the counter as a precaution. Regulars tend to come on set days, Friday lunchtime or Saturday evening among them. The shop opens Monday to Sunday and closes on Tuesdays.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is the main draw, especially cod in a light, crisp batter, with reviewers describing the fish as freshly prepared. Staff are repeatedly called lovely, even when busy, and several reviewers mention generous portions and very reasonable prices. One regular who ordered most Fridays at lunchtime for years says it was never less than lovely, and another found the staff quick and methodical despite a queue. A few reviewers also praise the Chinese food, with one ordering every Saturday evening. The one detailed complaint comes from a longtime customer who says the fish seemed like supermarket prepared battered fish, with dry, chewy batter like leather, and who questioned whether it was fresh cod. After lockdown, one reviewer noted the plastic shields as a precaution. Another describes a group of Explorer Scouts being served a dozen or so portions of chips shortly before closing.

“The best freshly made Chinese food in the area, we have an order every Saturday evening, staff are so lovely even when it's busy, busy. 😀”

“Very disappointed. Have been coming here for a while for their fish and chips which were always fresh fish , freshly cooked while you wait. This time they provided something more like supermarket prepared battered fish. Was it cod… really? Was it fresh? The batter was like leather. It was dry and chewy. I will be giving this place a miss in the future.”
