About Mayfair Chinese Restaurant

Mayfair Chinese Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant at 2A Guildhall Square in Portsmouth that pairs a regular Chinese menu with an all-you-can-eat hotpot and Korean BBQ offer. Diners can order from the Chinese menu, or choose the hotpot and Korean BBQ format when they want to cook and eat at their own pace across several rounds. That mix lets a table split between à la carte dishes and the all-you-can-eat option, which suits groups with different preferences.

Customer Review Summary

Most reviewers return for the all you can eat hotpot and Korean BBQ, where diners describe enormous amounts of vegetables and meat brought out, and one says it saves a trip to Southampton. Close behind is the Dry Pot chicken, called delicious with a perfect spice level, along with vegetarian aubergine, tofu, beans and noodles. Many point to authenticity, a busy crowd and a menu mixing familiar takeaway dishes with unfamiliar ones. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, welcoming and attentive, and several call the portions and prices good value. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the prawn crackers cooked in old oil, the spare ribs and King Pao chicken fatty and gristly, and the peanuts stale. Another waited for dumplings that never arrived until the main course was served. A third found the all you can eat pricey, with no kimchi and rice charged extra. One parent was charged full price for an 8 year old, and the waiter kindly offered half price once it was raised.

“Prawn crackers clearly cooked in old oil. Spare ribs nicely spiced but with fat and gristle on them. King Pao chicken fatty and gristly. Sauce glutinous. Peanuts stale. Boiled rice good. Service good but the food was pretty dreadful. Avoid.”

“Sadly not many positives: The welcome was warm and friendly, so first impressions were good. Unfortunately, the meal itself was disappointing. I ordered dumplings, sweet and sour pork Chinese-style, and rice. When I ordered the pork, I was met with a raised eyebrow and a "Really?", before being told it would take around 20 minutes to prepare. I was happy to wait. The bigger issue was that my dumplings never arrived. I had to ask twice, and by that point my main course had already been served. The staff could see I wasn't eating because I was still waiting for my starter, but no one seemed to address the situation. For the price, I expected a much better experience. My benchmark is Xi Home in London, where I order the same dishes for a similar price and consistently receive better food and much smoother service. A pleasant welcome wasn't enough to make up for the poor service and underwhelming food. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend it.”

“We recently visited the restaurant to try hotpot for the first time. The staff were all welcoming and kindly explained everything to us. We decided on the unlimited KBBQ and HotPot for the two of us. They brought out enormous amounts of vegetables and meats for us to use. The food was amazing and the service was very attentive. I would recommend visiting to try all thy have to offer. We would love to return to try some of the menu items!”

“It was very quiet, went to Mayfair Chinese for hot pot and korean bbq all you can eat, I'm used to korean bbq so having a korean bbq without kimchi was a huge disappointment but the food was still nice. I would like to point the fact that they do not have a price for kids for the all you can eat, they charged full price for my 8 years old kid which is around 33 pounds but when I mentioned it the waiter kindly offered to make it half price for my child so I did appreciate the gesture. Coming from London, i think the price is a bit high as you still need to pay extra for the rice, most of korean bbq all you can eat come with unlimited rice and veg.”

“Fantastic Chinese restaurant, possibly the best Chinese meal we've ever had. It's clear this place is authentic to the local Chinese community here in Portsmouth, which is great to see. The menu features a number 'known takeaway' dishes but also others I've never seen before. We tried the Dry Pot chicken (large black bowl in photo) which was absolutely delicious - perfect spice level along with other great flavours. Get past the the unassuming entrance and you will not be disappointed!”
