About Hong Kong Tea Bar

Hong Kong Tea Bar is a cafe at 20-22 Lake Rd in Portsmouth, serving Hong Kong-style Cantonese dishes over rice, noodles or ho fun. The braised beef brisket in chu hou sauce comes with rice, and the char siu is served the same way. Stir-fried beef ho fun covers the noodle side of the menu. Every meal comes with a free drink, and the choices are tea, coffee, milk tea or Chinese tea, so the meal and the drink arrive as one order. The cafe opens Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary

Beef brisket is the dish reviewers raise most, braised until tender and rich, whether in curry or Chu Hou sauce, with marinated beef in black bean sauce also praised for its strong flavour. Close behind is pork belly, called very crispy when barbecued and braised with preserved vegetables, along with char siu rice. Stir-fried beef ho fun, which one diner says has good wok hee, and three-meat egg fried rice come up repeatedly, and the salt and pepper chips surprised one first-time visitor. Portions are called generous throughout, and the food is described as authentic Hong Kong and Cantonese, arriving quickly and piping hot. Service is called friendly and quick. On the downside, one reviewer says the toilets are not in the best condition, and another, who likes the cosy interior, voices concern about hygiene news and food safety breaches from some years back. A couple of reviewers point to the free tea or coffee that comes with a meal.

“Had the Stir-fried Beef Ho-fun, and the Three Meat with egg fried rice. Food is amazing, both dining in and taking away. Food comes out quickly and piping hot. Service is nice and quick. Toilets are not in the best conditions.”

“One of my friends introduced me to this place when I was in my first year of my undergrad studies at the university here in Portsmouth. That was 4 years ago. I've been going to this place ever since. Portsmouth is full of local cuisine places from various Asian countries but nothing beats this one. To say that the portions are generous is to not say anything at all. And the food... man I don't know what they put in it but it's genuinely mind blowing, every, single, time, that I go there. My 2 favourite meals are the kung pau chicken with egg fried rice or beef in black bean sauce with egg fried rice.”

“6 adults and 2 young kids had dinner tonight and several varieties of fried or roasted meats were ordered that were served with white rice or noodles or " ho fun- 河粉“. All were well prepared and tasted great. The beef fried ho fun had good " wok hee ". The roast pork, roast duck, soft bone pork with cartilage plus the sweet and sour chicken were fresh and delicious 😋”
