About Toby Carvery Hilsea

Toby Carvery Hilsea is a British carvery on Copnor Rd in Portsmouth, serving breakfast alongside its main roast offering. The carvery operates from a counter where a member of the team carves the meat, with beef and gammon among the options, and a smaller-plate children's version available for younger diners. Breakfast runs in the morning with cappuccinos on the hot drinks list, and refillable soft drinks are offered through the day. Tables are served by waiting staff, and bookings can be made in advance for larger groups. Prices for the carvery are higher on Sundays than across the rest of the week.

Customer Review Summary

Reviews describe a mixed experience, with several calling out poor service at the carvery counter, including abrupt refusals over menu requests and an hour-long wait for a Sunday roast. A delivery order reportedly arrived with scant meat and reheated sides, while others found the breakfast and cappuccinos weak. Many, however, praise the food and friendly front-of-house staff, and one notes plans to return.

“I have ordered today "our famous carvery" to be delivered to my place as I have a temporary disability.very disappointing. only leftovers, almost no meat and the sides seemed to have been recovered from other plates as leftovers from other customers and tasted rancid. I'm really sorry I didn't take pictures to show them what a mess they put in the order. Too bad, I'll never order from here again.”

“We visited on Bank Holiday Monday after booking a table for two, and unfortunately the experience was disappointing. From the moment we arrived at the carvery counter, there was no smile, no warm greeting or any sense that we were welcome. The staff member serving the meat just looked miserable, and we genuinely felt like we were an inconvenience to him. I had planned to have the gammon, but when I asked for it, I was simply met with a blank “no”. There was no explanation, no apology and no offer of when it might be available — just a blunt response. When I asked whether there would be more coming out, I was told it would be another hour, again with no apology or any attempt to be helpful. As I wasn’t particularly hungry and don’t really like the other meat options, I asked if I could have a children’s carvery, as it comes on a smaller plate with less meat and costs less. I genuinely couldn’t understand why this was an issue, especially as we’ve previously visited with my nan, who doesn’t want a large portion, and we’ve never had any problem with this before. The issue wasn’t necessarily that he said no. If he’d simply explained politely that it wasn’t allowed because of company policy, I would have accepted that. Instead, he was extremely abrupt and dismissive, repeatedly saying things along the lines of, “No, no, I’m not doing that. Can’t do it. Not doing it.” There was no explanation, apology or attempt to find a solution. The whole interaction was so unpleasant that we decided to leave without eating. It was particularly disappointing as we’d planned to have a nice meal out on Bank Holiday Monday, and it ended up completely ruining the experience for us. I do want to mention that the lady at the front counter was lovely and understanding when we explained what had happened, and kindly didn’t charge us for our refillable drinks, which we really appreciated. Unfortunately, the attitude of the member of staff serving the meat completely overshadowed everything else. A little bit of politeness, warmth and basic customer service would have made such a difference. We ended up going somewhere else afterwards and had a much nicer experience.”

“Charges more for a carvery on a Sunday, then any other day of the week? Beef was full of fat, beef dripping roast potatoes were soggy and their 'special' gravy is a flavourless bistro... only saving grace was our waitress”

“Great meal. Good service. Very loud in area I was seated in. Too loud to have a conversation. We had no children but sat in a smallish area with more children than adults”
  • Robert Mckerrow
“Took an hour to get the carvery. Would not recommend for a Sunday”
