Quick info
About Dulse and Brose
Dulse and Brose is a restaurant in Portree on Skye, set in a cottage-style building with bistro interiors at 13 Bosville Terrace. It opens daily, evenings only, and sits within a hotel. The kitchen cooks Scottish comfort food, with local beef and duck among the mains alongside a lamb shank. Fish gets its own place on the menu through a salmon trilogy. Many dishes are gluten free, which gives guests with that dietary need plenty to choose from. The bar stocks Scottish whisky, local spirits and lagers, and pours Skye gin with elderflower tonic for anyone who wants a drink with dinner.

Customer Review Summary
Salmon draws the most praise, from a salmon steak to a salmon trilogy that one couple says lets the sweetness of Scottish salmon come through. Close behind are the braised lamb shank, duck, pan seared sea bass, cod fishcakes and mussels, which one diner calls the best they have ever had. Reviewers also single out calamari, local spirits and a Skye gin with elderflower tonic. Several note how much of the menu is gluten free, and a few suggest reserving well in advance. Most describe friendly, attentive staff. Value and pacing draw the complaints. One diner found the food under seasoned, with sides arriving well before the mains and staff who had to be flagged down for almost everything. Another calls the menu overpriced, citing a dry sticky toffee pudding, a plain caramelised onion soup and a small banana crumble. A third found the service rushed, with the bill delivered while they were still drinking wine.

“I wish I had booked both of my Portree dinners here! The food is tasty, service friendly and helpful. I liked my calamari starter and pan seared sea bass main. The food ordered by a large group sitting near allowed me to see most of the rest of the menu and it all looked great and they were all happily eating away. I would have been happy with a lot of the choices on the menu. And I’m gluten free, which was not a big deal because so much of the menu is gluten free to begin with! Note: I’m not celiac so didn’t ask about food separation and prep. Casual, relaxed, good food.”

“Disappointing and not at all worth the money. Quite dissatisfied with my meal, the service, and the atmosphere here, especially after all the positive reviews. The service was mediocre at best. All staff were young girls, and nothing against them, but you can tell they lack the proper experience and training to be working in an establishment that charges nearly £40 per main dish. No one introduced themselves, they seldom came to check up on us, and we had to flag them down for practically everything. We ended up waiting so long for someone to bring the machine that we had to go up and ask, despite seeing our waitress leisurely cleaning tables nearby and ignoring us flagging her down. The food was decent, but not near worth the price. Completly under seasoned and our sides came out 10 minutes before our mains. I wouldn’t have a complaint if it was £10 cheaper. Very disjointed from the price. The atmosphere was also quite lacking for what is marketed as a higher end restaurant. It wasn’t charming nor inviting. Overall not worth it if you’re staying in Portreee. There are many places that are better value and not as disjointed from their price point.”

“The food is amazing! Truly delicious. All locally sourced & beautifully presented. The service, however, felt very rushed. Very. "EverythingAlrightForYouGuysGreatThankYou" whilst walking swiftly by & not waiting for a response. Feeling rushed into making desert choices quickly. Bill delivered while we were still drinking wine. Food this good (and at this price point!) should be savoured & enjoyed at leisure. Dear Chefs - amazing work! Dear Managers - Slow Down!”

“The best spot for dinner in Portree! A cozy, quality restaurant serving fresh, local food, expertly prepared and presented. The staff are excellent. Every member of staff we interacted with were so pleasant and friendly. They made our dinner such a memorable experience. We ordered the salmon steak and the braised lamb shank. Absolutely delicious on both counts. Both were served with fresh vegetables and served up quickly. They offer a great selection of bar drinks - I would recommend sampling some of the excellent Scottish whisky or gin. I had a Skye gin with elderflower tonic - excellent choice! We didn’t have room for dessert, but the dessert menu is a great way to end the meal. The mango cheesecake would have been my choice! I would recommend a reservation as Portree can be quite busy with tourists. Our table was ready when we arrived a few minutes early and they seated us straight away. The prices are very reasonable. Parking is available right out front or in the public parking lot near the water. Highly recommended. Wonderful food. Exceptional service. 5-star all the way! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
