About Mowgli Street Food Oxford

Mowgli Street Food Oxford is an Indian restaurant in Oxford, on the Westgate shopping centre rooftop at 309 The Westgate, where fairy lights and hanging swing seats give diners a different kind of seat for a meal. The menu is built around Indian street food, with small plates and tiffin-style sharing dishes served in metal tiffin containers. Chaat dishes include the chat bombs, and the butter chicken comes with rice and roti. Black dhal sits among the dhal dishes. A sharing menu brings curries, rice, roti or flatbreads and ice cream together in one deal for the table. Vegetarian options run alongside separate vegan and gluten-free menus. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the dhal and the chats, with black dhal and temple daal praised alongside yoghurt bombs, bhel and dahi puri. Close behind are the butter chicken with roti, the prawn curry and the goan fish curry, and several describe the food as fresh, punchy, authentic and bursting with flavour. Fairy lights and hanging swing seats get repeated mention, along with a loud, lively mood, though one reviewer found the swings demanding on core strength. Reviewers also note the vegetarian choices, and one was asked about vegan and gluten free menus. Some are less convinced. One calls the portions small, the butter chicken a tiny dish and the bread dry. Another found the curries oddly sweet and sour and the paneer curry overpowering, and one says the server complained about being paid in cash. A diner felt misled when still water accepted on arrival was charged on the bill. The sharing menu ends with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream.

“The atmosphere was nice it was quiet and the restaurant was very nice. The server found me paying cash inconvenient and complained about it. The food was shockingly small and overpriced it was like la carte. The butter chicken was £10 for a tiny dish and the pafia bread was inflated and dry. It almost looked pregnant. Bad experience I would not come here again.”

“Tucked on top of the Westgate shopping centre, Mowgli is worth visiting place. The first thing that hits you is the décor. Fairy lights everywhere, hanging swing seats, and a warm, slightly chaotic energy that feels more like a friend's garden party than a restaurant. It's loud in the best way. Not a place for a quiet, whispered conversation, but perfect for catching up with a group over a table crowded with small plates. We went in not really knowing how to order, and that turned out to be half the fun. The menu is built around Indian street food, tiffin-style sharing dishes rather than the usual starter-main-dessert format. We ended up with the chicken, keema, pao bhaji, tamarind fries, and a bowl of dahl, all landing on the table within minutes of each other. Everything was fresh, punchy, and clearly not aiming for the safe, familiar curry-house flavours. Service was genuinely warm without being overbearing, our waiter talked us through the dishes without making us feel rushed, even though the place was packed. Between the food, the atmosphere, and the view over Oxford's rooftops, it's an easy place to recommend, especially for a group night out rather than a quiet dinner for two.”

“The ambience was great, but unfortunately the food was disappointing. Both the quality and quantity were below average. The curries had an odd sweet-and-sour flavor that didn't work well, and the paneer curry had an overwhelming taste that lingered long after the meal. Overall, the dining experience fell short because of the food, despite the pleasant atmosphere.”

“I dined twice during a short stay in Oxford. Mobility is just a few minutes walk from the Premier Inn where I was staying. On Wednesday I had the mother butter chicken with basmati rice and a couple of roti's. It was so good I had the same the following evening. Glad of the roti's to polish off the delicious sauce! Would definitely recommend must try the chats next time.”

“Excellent food - great selection of both starters, mains, and sides. Appreciated the full section with vegetarian options + we were asked if we wanted a vegan and/or gluten-free menu. Great vibes and good staff. Seating both inside and out. Nice selection of drinks (alcoholic and non).”

Good to know

“Mowgli is all about how Indians eat at home and on their streets. She was born to feed the raw need Indians have for tiffins full of fresh bright intense flavour. Mowgli is not about the intimate, hushed dining experience. It is about the smash and grab zing of healthy, light, virtuosic herbs and spices. The simple dishes of a Mowgli menu are a million miles away from the curry stereotype. These dishes convey the truth that real Indian food is extremely healthy, often vegan and always packed with fresh flavour.”
