  “As much as I usually enjoy the coffee here, today's experience was really disappointing. My latte was served so hot that it actually hurt my throat. I mentioned this to a member of staff, but no offer was made to remake it. By the time I got to the office and it had finally cooled enough to drink, the milk had separated and it looked like cloudy water. It was completely undrinkable. Unfortunately, my coffee – and my money – ended up going down the drain.”

  “Exceptional coffee, never burnt or bitter. Smooth, delicious deep and rich. A great selection of tasty pastries too. The staff are all also fantastic, efficient, attentive, but with a relaxed warmth. My Oxford 'go to'.”

  “Terrible customer service. I was spoken to incredibly rudely by the manager simply for asking a reasonable question about my loyalty card, and I left feeling really poorly treated. The card issue itself was minor — they’d redesigned their loyalty scheme and refused to honour or transfer my two existing stamps — but the way I was treated when I questioned it is why I won’t be returning. Edit: The manager’s lengthy reply below speaks for itself. For the record, his final email response to my complaint about how I was treated was, in full: ‘Sure, thank for your reply. Have a great day.’ Readers can draw their own conclusions.”

  “I visited with my partner on 27/5/26 at 3:30pm on a day trip to Oxford to find some coffee beans! 🙂 The young man who was working at this time (I'm so sorry we didn't catch his name) was the most helpful and friendly person, he was incredibly patient with us and also others waiting in the que as he was on his own. He was very knowledgeable about the coffee and kindly offered to grind the beans for us which was a great help as we weren't too sure what we were doing! 🙂 The coffee beans smelt fantastic and the caramel frappe was absolutely delicious and much better than any other coffee chain we have visited! We just wanted to say a huge thank you to the young man for your incredible customer service and you are a real credit to the company!”

  “Having reviewed the responses to multiple negative customer reviews, there appears to be a consistent pattern of the business owner justifying or dismissing concerns, particularly those involving interactions with a specific male staff member (who may be the owner or closely connected to them). In several replies, it is stated that CCTV footage has been reviewed, which either it’s just the video and no audio, or it’s not checked at all since it’s the owner that’s carrying this behaviour out. The responses also do not appear to meaningfully address or resolve the issues raised by customers, which suggest a lack of willingness to investigate or rectify recurring complaints. I was recommended this shop for its matcha, and as I was visiting Oxford and had travelled three hours to get there, I decided to give Mayas a try. When I arrived, the door was open, the lights were on, and music was playing loudly, so it was perfectly reasonable to assume the café was still open. The statement by the male employee in the response to the negative review saying that we moved past the physical barriers is simply untrue. There were no physical barriers in place. I politely asked the male staff member if they were still serving. I appreciate it was around 7pm and the shop may have been closed, but I thought it was worth asking. Because the music was so loud, I could not clearly hear his response. Once we realised the café was closed, we immediately began to leave. At that point, the staff member walked over to the iPad, turned the music off, came to the end of the bar, and began speaking to us in a rude and hostile manner. He said something along the lines of, “You came in asking if we were closed, can you not tell we are closed?” I was genuinely shocked by this response. We calmly explained that we understood it may have been the end of a long day, but there was no need to speak to us that way. We thanked him and said goodbye. He then walked to the door, closed it (which should have been done initially if the shop was closed), and muttered offensive words. I am genuinely taken aback that anyone would think this is an acceptable way to speak to people, let alone potential customers. The interaction was completely unprofessional, unnecessarily hostile, and demonstrated a serious lack of basic courtesy and communication skills. I believe the way employees communicate with customers should be seriously reviewed. To anyone that does experience this, leave a review but consider speaking to the local council and trading standards. Poor customer service and treating members of the public in such manner with no reprimands seriously needs to be considered.”

  “I came down to Oxford from up North for a conference and when I got off the train I desperately wanted a great coffee. I popped ‘specialty coffee’ in Google and Maya’s Stores was nearby. I could tell from the outside that it was a good coffee place but when I stepped inside it became more than that because of the wonderful, friendly and upbeat service I received from Faith, the lovely barista. She was clearly very busy with multiple orders but wasn’t fazed. She took time to chat with me and remind me what a Cortado is (I know, should’ve remembered!). I ordered one and it was excellent! So much so that I had another one later. Faith helped me out with the sizing of one of the nice hoodies I wanted to buy. She made my Oxford coffee experience such a nice one. I wish her and Maya’s all the best.”

  “They make matcha from scratch! Rather than just pour it from premade. I love their fluffy latte combined with the broche croissant/pain au chocolate. Their chocolate drinks are also amazing! Not too sweet or creamy.”
