About Brown's Cafe

Inside Oxford's Covered Market near the Market Street entrance, Brown's Cafe has served breakfasts and teas since 1924, with a vintage menu still on the wall showing the original prices in shillings. The room keeps its traditional wooden chairs and tables, unpadded, and a step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs. Ordering runs at the counter, where staff take payment before showing guests to a table and bringing the food over. The kitchen covers a Full English called the May Day, jacket potatoes, steak and kidney pie, and fish and chips, alongside Portuguese additions such as pastel de nata and pastéis de bacalhau. Tea comes as a pot of loose leaf with a strainer and extra hot water. It opens daily on a walk-in basis, with no booking taken. Mornings and lunchtimes draw queues, though tables turn over quickly and are sometimes shared when the room fills.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the full English breakfast, especially the May Day version, praised for thick bacon, black pudding and sausages with decent bite, with a choice of toast or fried bread. Close behind is the pot of loose leaf tea, served with a strainer and extra hot water, and the coffee, including cappuccinos and a Portuguese brand. Carrot cake, scones with clotted cream, jacket potatoes, spaghetti Bolognese and steak and kidney pie also get mentions, along with pastel de nata. Service is described as quick and friendly, and tables turn over fast even when the queue is long.

“Lovely, quiet place in the middle of Oxford. The staff was amazing and the food very delicious and filling. We went there with a toddler and they had no problem with giving us a smaller portion and happily packed up the rest for us to take away.”

“Well worth a visit , We always enjoy a lovely bacon & egg sandwich on our arrival in Oxford for shopping. Soft bread, Runny fried egg, crispy bacon and fantastic coffee. The gentleman on the counter needs a special mention for his lovely welcome & thanks as we leave every time we pop in.”

“Brown’s is a Covered Market institution; classic breakfasts, plenty of choice, and no attempt to overcomplicate it. I’ve been many times. It’s consistent. Full English done right. Good sausages with decent bite, solid bacon, eggs cooked as asked whether fried or poached. Beans and grilled tomato exactly as expected. With fried bread if that's your thing. Toast too. Generous plates. Lots of options if you want something different. The pot of leaf tea is my highlight. Strong, proper brew strength, served in a pot and with extra hot water. Perfect with my breakfast. It’s often crowded but the turnover is quick. Usually shown to a table, order at the counter, food brought over without much wait. Extra tables outside help when the market is busy. Not fancy. Not trying to be. Just dependable and tasty. Busy but friendly lot.”
