About The British Queen, A Heartwood Inn

The British Queen, A Heartwood Inn is a pub, bar and restaurant on Crofton Road in Orpington, set in a room laid out for relaxed meals and pints. The kitchen takes a brasserie approach, turning out crab, pork roast and fillet steak alongside triple cooked chips and a tomahawk pork steak. The team adapts dishes for children and for specific dietary requirements, and dogs are welcome throughout. Large groups are taken in stride, with one booking for sixteen noted at the table. Payment runs through the usual bar and dining setup, and special offers are communicated by staff when they apply. Drinks cover proper pints and the full bar list. Booking posture is reservations, so tables are held in advance. The menu closes on a pistachio soufflé for those who plan ahead.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the food, with the triple cooked chips and fillet steak singled out as special, and another reviewer calling the chips divine alongside a crab starter. Close behind are the pork roast and tomahawk pork steak, plus a pistachio soufflé described as proper. Service draws steady credit, with reviewers calling the staff attentive, kind and friendly, and one regular says they keep returning for it. A party of sixteen says the team dealt with their large table extremely well. The main criticism comes from one diner who found a steak tasteless and badly burnt, with a watery peppercorn sauce that was swapped for an equally watery Roquefort sauce, and who called a partner's main tiny. That meal was taken off the bill after the diner refused the fixed gratuity. Another reviewer popping in for a pint found the choice of proper beer limited. One family notes the kitchen adapted dishes for their granddaughter.

“This is very simple. Went for dinner, expecting a good experience as this restaurant claims to be under Raymond Blanc's empire. Starters were average, but my partners main was tiny, and my steak was tasteless and badly burnt, with a very watery peppercorn sauce. this was changed for a Roquefort sauce which was also very watery, - dreadful. the waitress was good, and when Irefused to pay the fixed gratuity, the poor lady did complain to the manager and get my meal taken off the bill.”

  • Aaron Hunt
“Beautiful food this evening, gorgeous fillet steak served with the perfect amount of triple cooked chips!! They really are special (chips) The fillet was 1st class! Mike had tomahawk pork steak- equally delicious he said Thank you”
  • Mark Fisher
“Went here with my parents. The crab was great, and the chips were divine, albeit possibly not the healthiest. Could have had a bit more salad though. My parents both enjoyed their pork roast, and it certainly looked very good. Had a good (proper) pistachio soufflé for dessert.”
  • Grace McMillan
“We went on a Monday night so wasn’t busy but food was fantastic and service excellent - professional but very friendly. They adapted dishes too for our granddaughter Well done!”
