About The King's Head

The King's Head is a restaurant at 177 High St in Ongar, under new independent ownership and housed in a Grade II listed building that began in 1679 as a coaching inn and takes its name from King James II. The kitchen works around a wood-fired pizza oven and serves mainly Italian food, with pizza offered as a starter. Roasts and a tomahawk share the menu with a BBQ short rib. Inside, the building has lots of little rooms alongside larger areas, and a private dining room seats up to 20 for groups, corporate and club meetings and celebrations. Background music plays indoors, and live music has included a saxophonist and singer and an Abba night. A field and stream run around the rear of the property, and a large car park sits behind the building.

Customer Review Summary

Roasts draw the most praise, with diners singling out the lamb at Sunday lunch, the tomahawk, and a bbq short rib that one parent liked enough to order again. Close behind are the wood fired pizzas, including an aubergine one called delicious, and a cinnamon apple crumble one diner says will need a lot of beating. Reviewers repeatedly describe the servers as friendly, helpful and attentive without intruding, and several mention live music, from a saxophonist and singer at Sunday lunch to an Abba night. The English breakfast is called good quality and a healthy size. The complaints are smaller. One reviewer finds the pub side ok but says nobody seems to be serving, and a gin order meant staff going off to the kitchen. Another found the room quiet shortly after opening, and a third noted no music on the outdoor seating. That same short rib reviewer came back twice more, and although it was not on the menu, the head chef cooked it as a roast, then in a Korean style, and came out to check they were happy.

“Had a fabulous lunch with my son. The food was superb and the cinnamon apple crumble will need a lot of beating. Service was excellent, Molly was around when we needed her but never an intrusion on our meal. Beautiful set up, kitchen looks fantastic. The only reason why Atmosphere didn't get 5 stars was it was not long after opening and quiet at that time. Will definitely be going back soon.”

“Another fantastic experience, and once again, the food was absolutely exceptional. For a town-street pub, the food coming out of this kitchen is genuinely Michelin-style. Every dish is beautifully presented, packed with flavour, and clearly made with real passion and attention to detail. The flavours burst with every bite — mouth-watering, eye-catching and genuinely mind-blowing. The service was equally impressive. Ellie was fantastic — professional, attentive and brilliant with the finer details that can make such a difference to a dining experience. Nothing was missed, and her service really added to the whole evening. And then there’s Pete, the chef — wow! What is being produced in that kitchen is unreal. You can taste the skill, creativity and care in every plate. The quality of the food is way beyond what you would normally expect from a pub, and it absolutely deserves recognition. Having worked as a manager within hospitality for over 10 years, you definitely learn to recognise exceptional service, quality and genuine hospitality when you experience it. This is one of those places where everything comes together — fantastic food, professional service and a team that clearly cares about what they do. And I have to mention the background music — what a hit! It created the perfect atmosphere without overpowering the experience. It really added to the vibe and made the whole evening feel relaxed, enjoyable and well thought out. An outstanding pub and restaurant. Exceptional food, fantastic service, brilliant atmosphere and a chef who is seriously talented. We’ll definitely be back!”

“We came here last Wednesday and the four of us had different meal choices. My 11 year old son had the bbq short rib that made me well jealous!! I needed to have my own portion so came again on Sunday with just my boy. Even though it wasn't on the menu, the head chef Pete made it happen. My boy had the standard bbq option and I had it as a roast. It didn't disappoint 🙌. Its now Tuesday night and ive stopped off on my way home from work at 8pm. Again, its not on the menu but Pete made it happen!! This time he made it differently, in a kind of Korean style, and once again it didn't disappoint!! He even came out the kitchen to check i was happy with today's version.. Can't recommend this place highly enough!”

“My friend and I had dinner at The Kings Head on Tuesday early evening. I've always liked the Kings Head but even more under the new management and updated menu. The food was really good and very reasonable. Molly, our server, was so helpful and friendly. A real mid week treat!”
