About Pavilion Cafe

Pavilion Cafe is a cafe and breakfast spot in Chadderton Hall Park, Oldham, overlooking the bowling green. It operates on a walk-in basis, cash only with no card payments accepted, and the counter serves toasties, cakes, and ice-cream and lollies rather than a full breakfast menu, which has been scaled back over time. Seating is available indoors and outside, all on one level with flat access, suiting visitors with mobility needs, and dogs are welcome alongside the tables. High chairs are on hand for families with young children. It opens daily through the daytime, though hours shorten in winter to around 3pm, when the offer narrows to cakes, crisps, and coffee. A small carpark sits nearby in the park, with further parking on the main road or in a lay-by, and a council-maintained toilet stands at the back of the building.

Customer Review Summary

Most reviewers come for the setting in Chadderton Hall Park, with indoor and outdoor tables looking over the park and the bowling green. Praise goes to a big slice of Victoria sponge, cream scones with real clotted cream, a latte, and a veggie breakfast. Dog walkers mention a sausage cooked specifically for dogs and fleecy blankets on the outside tables. Several call the staff friendly and the prices reasonable. Other reviewers are more critical, and the complaints recur. Cash only is raised repeatedly, and one reviewer walked off to a coffee chain that takes cards. Several say the food has slipped, describing microwave meals, no chips or salad, a ham salad sandwich with no salad, and a meat and potato pie with no meat. Some call sausage on toast expensive for what arrives. One reviewer describes staff chatting while waiting customers were ignored at breakfast, and another says the tea and coffee arrived only after the food had been eaten.

“We visited earlier with family, fairly large group, the outdoor tables had a lovely view of the park. We ordered 3 meat pies, 3 cakes and 3 hot drinks. All good quality, lovely big slice of Victoria Sponge arrived. It was a lovely little cafe, maybe a little pricey, but these small businesses have to be to keep going and we are always happy to support the small businesses! Would love to go back when we visit the family again! Friendly staff. One toiket available round the back of the cafe, which is looked after by the council, according to a sign, but if you run out of paper, it says to ask the staff in the shop for more!”

“We went just before closing because we didn't realise it shuts at 3 during winter, so only cakes crisps and coffee were available and the server seemed a bit distracted, possibly had a long day. But they did a great coffee and had milk alternatives available, cake was ok.”

“Lovely cafe. Staff very friendly and accommodating to my fussy granddaughter, really nice fresh food.”
  • Kevin Kennedy
“Visited here with my client who has Down Syndrome. I ordered sausage on toast, which cost £4.00. Very expensive for 2 rounds of bread and 2 sausages 🙄. Also, the tea and coffee didnt arrive until after we had eaten our food. Won't be going back.”
