About Made-Well Community Interest Company

Made-Well Community Interest Company runs a cafe in West Fishleigh, Okehampton, on a working animal-care site that supports people with disabilities. The cafe serves coffee, sandwiches and lunch food, cooked in-house with locally sourced produce. Around it, visitors can see goats, guinea pigs, a tortoise and a cockerel, and the animal club grooms and dresses the ponies. Private pony walks are offered per child. The grounds hold gardens, flowers, allotments and a play park. Indoors, a sensory room can be booked for hire, and a quiet space called the bubble gives people somewhere to step away. Dogs are welcome on site.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the animals, and the pony walks stand out, with children and groups of adults grooming and dressing up the ponies before taking them for a little walk. Close behind are the hands-on sessions, where visitors bath a tortoise, hold guinea pigs and feed the goats. The grounds also draw praise as lovely and serene, with gardens, flowers and allotments to wander through. Several stress how accessible the site is, pointing to the sensory room, a Changing Places toilet, a play park and a quiet space called the bubble, where some people ate their packed lunch out of the wind. The café is described as serving delicious food, including freshly made sandwiches with coffee, at reasonable prices, with outdoor seating. Staff are repeatedly called lovely, welcoming and accommodating, and one family says they went out of their way to be kind to their children. Families with toddlers describe the atmosphere as calm and friendly, and one cockerel was a firm favourite for a whole family.

“We visited yesterday based on recommendation from the things to do with kids website. It was brilliant! Not too busy, all completely free to walk around and see the animals etc. We paid £5 per child to have their own private pony walk and then enjoyed a scummy lunch in the cafe after. The prices in the cafe are so reasonable and the staff were all so lovely. Nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to be kind to our children. Rockie (the cockerel) was a firm fav for the whole family.”

“Great place for a day out with the children. Visiting the farm and animals then a stop in the cafe for a coffee and sandwich freshly made. Delicious 😋”

“What a lovely accessible place. All people working were lovely. The grounds are lovely and accessible. The animals are well cared for and have plenty to graze on. The toddler loved all areas. Such a serene place. Came here randomly, so glad we did”

“We visited made-well for an animal club session on a Saturday, for a group of adults i support. I had already heard great things about this place and wanted to check it out. Everyone was so friendly and accomidating. We brought our own packed lunch and sat in the picnic area which was relaxing and surrounded by lovely gardens and views. There was a quiet space called "the bubble" which was so tranquil inside, warm and cosy where a couple people ate their lunch away from the wind. During animal club activity everyone was able to have the opitunity to bath a tourtoise, hold guinea pigs and feed the goats. We then did some pony grooming, dressing up the ponies and then had the oppitunity to take the ponies for a little walk which everyone absolutely loved. Emma and reece were absolutely brilliant with all of the people we support and made everything inclusive and fun. Everywhere was accessible there was a brilliant play park. Unfortunately we didn't have time to go to the cafe but it looked really welcoming. And they have an amazing, sensory room that can be booked/hired. I would highly recommend visiting. Thank you so much for a lovely afternoon.”
