About Cityside Restaurant

Set inside a hospital on Hucknall Rd, Cityside Restaurant is a self-serve canteen and cafe serving Nottingham hospital staff, visitors and patients from the same counter, with a reduced rate applied to staff. Mornings bring a cooked breakfast of bacon, sausages and fried bread, ordered as a set number of items picked from the menu, and chips join the line at lunchtime. Hot drinks including latte run alongside the food. Trays are carried to plenty of table space, and the room is usually busy. No booking is taken, so diners simply walk in and queue at the counter. The entrance is step-free, which helps visitors with mobility needs reach the servery and seating without stairs. Opening runs Monday to Friday during the daytime, with the doors closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the breakfast at this hospital canteen, and the fried breakfast draws the most praise, with one diner delighted by the fried bread and another singling out the deep-fried potato cubes. Lunchtime chips also get a good word. Close behind, several describe the food as fresh, nutritious and tasty, with generous portions and a varied selection that covers dietary needs. The staff are repeatedly called friendly and helpful, and a few mention the discount for hospital staff and the plenty of table space in a busy room of patients, visitors and workers. The criticism is mixed. One reviewer found the bacon incredibly fatty, the sausages insipid and the layout bewildering, and was told toasted tea cakes were not served even though they appeared on the menu. Another says the cleaning in certain areas could be vastly improved. A third notes that extra veg on a dinner can add to the bill. One reviewer who presented a free meal form says it was kept because it had four days written on it, so a replacement had to be requested from the clinic.

“For a hospital restaurant and cafe this isnt too bad. Food is well made and of a reasonably good quality. Plenty of offerings for all meal types and dietary requirements. Prices are good (could be cheaper) for what you get. Plenty of table space. Mix of both staff, visitors and patients eat here so atmosphere is always busy.”

“Nice breakfast options and reasonable prices. Really liked that hospital staff are charged less than us the general public”
  • Mark H
“Staff friendly and helpful (and patient with old duffers like me). Food typical of hospital restaurant meals, they are simple, staightforward and I love them. Especially the fried breakfast - there was fried bread! And it was good fried bread. Lunchtime chips good too.”
  • Car K
“I arrived too early at the hospital for surgery, so I decided to have breakfast at the restaurant here. There weren't many food options, so I chose five items from the menu. I ended up selecting two portions of bacon since there weren't many choices. Among the food, I particularly enjoyed the deep-fried potato cubes; they were delicious.”
  • Laurance Higgs
“Good, nutritional tasty food and a varied selection to choose from. Friendly staff. As it's a hospital it's probably not the right atmosphere to take someone on a first date. For people visiting patients, it gives you a chance to recharge your own batteries in a non-clinic environment.”
