About The Oriental Paradise

On The Causeway in Northampton, The Oriental Paradise serves Chinese food on an all-you-can-eat basis, with dishes cooked to order and brought to the table rather than served from a hot plate. Starters and mains, including crispy duck, can be ordered repeatedly within a set sitting, and each sitting runs to a time limit at the table. Drinks are ordered separately from a bar area. Reservations are recommended, and booking secures a specific sitting time. Children are priced across two tiers, under 5 and under 12, and high chairs are available for families dining with young children. The entrance is step-free and wheelchair-accessible, suiting visitors with mobility needs. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. Tables look out over the canal basin, with views of the boat moorings alongside the dining room.

Customer Review Summary

The all you can eat buffet is the clear draw, with reviewers repeatedly praising the crispy duck, satay chicken skewers, and crispy chilli beef, along with dishes like sesame prawn toast and duck pancakes made to order rather than sat on a hot plate. Several highlight quick, helpful staff and a relaxed pace that lets diners work through starters, middle dishes, and mains without rushing, and one large wedding party notes staff went out of their way to accommodate a guest with a garlic allergy. Value comes up often, with the per-person buffet price and reduced rates for children mentioned favorably, though one reviewer felt a recent price increase made a midweek visit feel less worthwhile than previous years. One dissenting review describes the opposite experience: salty, overfried ribs, tough squid, a fatty duck, goopy lemon chicken, and a waitress who suggested they were ordering too much and wasting food. Busy peak times have also brought slower drink service for a couple of diners, though most describe leaving full, satisfied, and planning to return.

“We had a wedding meal here with a large group. The restaurant was great in helping with the booking, they were AMAZING with a member of the party who had a garlic allergy and the kitchen and wait staff were unbelievably accommodating. The food was great the payments (especially for a large multi table group) was handled brilliantly and hassle free.”

“Rough times in paradise. Food looks promising but in reality sadly Salty, overfried, greasy, sugarcoated, microwaved and chewy. The squid was like old boot leather the ribs so overfried no meat remained, the duck was fatty and terribly salty. The vege options ALL mushrooms and the prawn toast contains chicken 😳. The waitress remarked we should order less on the main course as we were wasting food. The lemon chicken was goopy sweet batter and the rice was beyond rank. I cannot understand how it was so busy. We left after a bite of the mains. Really poor quality, so much so, I would say we were eating yesterday’s leftovers. If you like good, quality food, avoid at all costs.”

“Good food but they are terrible at answering the phone”
  • Duncan Smithson
“Fantastic food, fantastic service. The food will just keep coming. Couldn't recommend it more”
  • Wes Rickward (WeZ)
“Good good at a fair price. One of the best Chinese restaurants around Northampton. Set menu or eat all you can. Call ahead for takeaway. Usually an hour wait when ordering takeaway. The restaurant is always busy.”
