About The Tai Pan
The Tai Pan is a Chinese takeaway at 41 Monaghan St in Newry, with an open kitchen in full view. The menu pairs Chinese cooking with a separate European section, and it runs across rice, noodle and curry dishes. Salt and chilli chicken is on the list, and it also comes as a salt and chilli snack box. Egg fried rice, chicken balls and spring rolls sit alongside it, and the European side includes chips with gravy. Orders can be phoned in for collection or placed in person, with the front counter staff serving customers.

Customer Review Summary
Salt and chilli chicken is the dish reviewers name most, though opinions split. One calls the salt and chilli snack box a go-to, another's sister keeps ordering the chicken, and a third found it hard and buried in chilli flakes. Close behind is the curry, called fine and decent by a few reviewers. Egg fried rice, chicken balls, spring rolls crammed with veg and the noodle dishes also earn praise from one reviewer, who calls it the best Chinese choice in Newry while noting the local standard is low. Another says it is one of the only takeaways they have not received dangerously undercooked food from. The complaints carry real weight. Reviewers describe very fatty duck, tough chicken one suspects was microwaved, sauces that taste like sugary syrup, and rice that seemed days old. Accounts of the front desk conflict: one calls the girls rude, another very nice. One reviewer says orders repeatedly arrive wrong, with a mere spoonful of curry sauce, and the gravy for the chips came in the bag instead of on them.

“A pretty nice place. Came on here first with doubts because there was an off-putting smell. But the staff weren’t bad, got seated right away and got a check up making sure everything was good, took about 10 minutes for all 3 of us to be served, the coke wasn’t freezing like the machine says, but it was cool enough. Quite a nice spot, it has a nice design and decorations that really fit the Chinese aesthetic. I’d recommend this place to try, because maybe I’m just biased. Would I come back? Maybe, but not for a bit anyway. Especially until they fix that smell…”

“Had to give 1 star as 0 stars isn't possible. Worst place ever always wrong food would swear curry was gold dust got litterly a spoon full over my wrong order will never be back wud advise people to stay away also as its not a one off it constantly happens place should be shut down. Also the gravy that came on the chips was in the bag not on the chips mess of a place pissed off is an understatement”

“Not usually one for leaving reviews but I feel I really need to on this occasion. The food here tonight was shockingly bad. Salt & chilli chicken was hard, with a huge concoction of chilli flakes sprinkled over the top that would bring a tear to your eye, literally no curry sauce and rice that had probably been prepared last week. I hate being biased but I think people should be aware of the quality of food here. Portion sizes are fine and the staff are quite polite but the food is dreadful. Mabye we choose this take-away on the wrong night but unfortunately I won’t be returning anytime soon. The highlight of my meal here had to of been the mineral sadly 👎”

“Been a few times as my sister likes the salt and chilli chicken but everything else on the menu is just sugary syrup for a sauce. Duck was very fatty to the point some pieces were just fat, chicken has been really tough at times which makes me think it's just been over-microwaved to order. Where to start on the girls on the front desk, doesn't seem to matter which of them is working or what day or anything they are always both so rude and clearly hate being there and you being there is an inconvenience to them.”
