About Pizza on the Square
Pizza on the Square is a bar in Malton serving craft beer and sourdough pizza from the Old Town Hall, a distinctive old building with more seating upstairs. The pizzas are made with the kitchen's own sourdough recipe, and the menu includes a puttanesca with anchovies and a margarita. Vegan cheese options and a gluten free menu are available. Rosemary garlic bread comes alongside, and the menu also covers Italian-style sandwiches, cakes and brownies. Guests order at the bar, and pizzas arrive on paper plates. The bar is open daily, and dogs are welcome on its stone floor.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the pizza itself, with the sourdough-style base and fresh ingredients drawing praise, from a puttanesca for those who like anchovies to a super cheesy margarita and a sauce one diner called excellent. Rosemary garlic bread and hot, crispy chips come close behind, and a weekday pizza and pint deal, vegan cheese and a gluten free menu also get mentions. Staff are described as friendly and helpful, including moving tables for one family and replacing a pizza that was sent back. The recurring complaint is slow food: one reviewer waited over an hour and another 45 minutes for two pizzas while tables sat empty, and one had to go to the bar to ask where the order was. Paper plates divide opinion, with one saying they stick to the pizza and another calling them fine. One reviewer found the chicken parm sandwich bland, with badly cut, partly burnt focaccia. Others mention the stone-floored old town hall being dog friendly, and a lunch order that was initially charged extra before staff corrected it.

“My wife and I were here in August. It wasn't busy but there was a good atmosphere and the staff were very helpful. Unfortunately we had to send our pizza back BUT the replacement pizza was absolutely delicious! No complaints, we were treated very well. Great service, great quality and options, well worth a visit!”

“Great pizza and a pint deal on weekdays. Bargain and excellent pizza. Paper plates are fine and make sense.”

“Pizza was nothing special and served on paper plates. Chicken parm sandwich was bland and the focaccia it was served on was badly cut so only half was actually a sandwich and half burnt + missing filling from the menu description. Side salad was barely there and not very fresh. Plenty of chips with the sandwich though. 3 staff on the bar, only one seemed to do any work the others were too busy flirting. In all honesty, wouldn't return.”

“Top quality pizza, had the puttanesca one which was delicious if you like savoury salty goodness and okay with anchovies. Rosemary garlic bread really good too. Went with my rather neurospicy family and staff were very understanding and helpful, facilitated moving tables when we needed to (brother is wary around dogs). Nice chill vibe, got us all round a table and relaxing atmosphere helped smoothed tensions after a heatwave day of chaos. Can’t thank the crew enough for being nice and welcoming to us all. Seriously good pizza!”

“The pizzas were absolutely beautiful and full of flavour, and the building itself is stunning—such a lovely place to sit and eat. It’s just a shame that the overall experience didn’t quite match the quality of the food. We had to wait over an hour for our pizzas, despite it not seeming overly busy, and we weren’t informed in advance that there would be such a long delay. We even overheard another customer raising the same concern, so it clearly wasn’t just us. When the first two pizzas arrived (on paper plates too), we then had to wait a further six minutes for the remaining two. By that point, the children were already halfway through theirs, which made it difficult to enjoy the meal together as a family. Customer service could also be improved. There wasn’t much communication or updates from staff, and I had to go up myself to ask where our food was. Overall, the food and venue have so much potential, it’s dog friendly (cool stone floor which our dog loved) but the service and kitchen efficiency need to be reviewed to better handle demand. With some improvements, this could easily be a fantastic dining experience.”
