About The Three Pilchards

The Three Pilchards is a pub on Quay Rd in Looe, with a roof terrace that has views over Polperro and a lower level where blankets are there to help yourself to. The kitchen runs two menus, one for sitting inside and one for sitting outside. Fish and chips comes in large and small portions, with battered fish and skin-on chips, and the fish pie and the steak and ale pie sit alongside it. The beer list pairs ales and beers with the pub's own Pale Ale, and there is a fire inside. Dogs are welcomed with water and treats.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips and fish pie anchor the praise, with reviewers singling out the light, crispy batter and proper chip shop chips, and a fish pie one diner calls the best they have had. Close behind are the steak and ale pie, the cod and chips with onion rings, and loaded fries, either Katsu chicken or brisket. Portions are described as large, and one reviewer mentions a take-out box for leftovers. Staff come across as warm and friendly, and one reviewer praises the gluten free food. Drinkers mention a decent beer selection and the pub's own Pale Ale, while the fireside seating, the dog welcomed with a bowl of water, and the blankets on the lower terrace also get a mention. Complaints are few. One reviewer found a pint of Alpacalypse IPA tasted watered down with soda water, and did not raise it with staff. Another found the roof terrace closed for refurbishment, which was not mentioned on the website, and expects summer tourist crowds. One reviewer recalls a country song playing in the background over fish and chips in the beer garden.

“Came here to rave about the Three Pilchards. We came down to stay in Polperro for a week’s family holiday. We had eaten a few times around the harbour, but wanted to try out the pub on recommendations from locals. There are two menus, not dissimilar, but dependent on whether you sit inside or out. I really wanted to try the fish pie so sat inside, and so glad we did. That was the best damn pie I have ever had! The portions were huge - They kindly gave me a take-out box so I could finish at home. The food is top notch and very reasonable. Huge range of drinks, especially accommodating little ones. The atmosphere is very welcoming, all the staff were warm and chatty. What I found really cool was the outdoor areas. The first level has an area where you can help yourself to blankets on those windier evenings. The top level terrace invites diners, or people just after a pint in the sun, to admire the views of beautiful Polperro up high. Not to be missed! Overall, this establishment oozes nautical charm, where you can immerse yourself in traditional coastal inn splendour. Great vibes, proper food and happy locals.”

“Had a drink up in the beer garden then fish and chips inside. We ate here the last time we visited for the day so didn’t plan to re visit as we like to try new places but given we wanted fish and chips, this was the place to go ! Oh boy I cannot begin to describe the amazing batter , never had anything like it and the chips were proper chip shop chips, scraps an all 🤗 large is large so come with an appetite. The service is great and the staff are warm and helpful. And they had Dolly playing in background (RIP) so what more do you need.”

“Stopped in today for lunch at The Three Pilchards. I had the large fish and chips and my wife had the steak and ale pie. I can honestly say that the fish and chips was the best I have had in a very, very long time. The batter was light and crispy and the skin on chips perfect. The pie was great with good quality meat and lovely little onions in it. Was so good we are thinking of going back again soon.”
