About Bardo St James's

Bardo St James's is an Italian restaurant at 4 Suffolk Place in St James's, London, with live music from a baby grand piano in the dining room. The room has red lamps and dim lighting, and it sits across the street from His Majesty's Theatre, which makes it a stop for post-theatre dinners. The kitchen makes its pasta in house, with agnolotti among the options, and the menu also carries antipasti starters and vitello tonnato. For dessert there is a chocolate tart with gold leaf. A cocktail menu and an extensive Italian wine list run alongside the food. The restaurant opens evenings only, Tuesday to Saturday, and closes on Sundays and Mondays.

Customer Review Summary

Live music is the draw reviewers raise most at Bardo St James's, with several praising it alongside the glowing red lamps and intimate room. Pasta comes close behind: diners name the agnolotti, bolognese, tagliolini with truffle, tagliatelle and vitello tonnato, one saying they tasted like Italy. Desserts earn mentions too, including the cheesecake, the Ferrero Rocher dessert and a chocolate tart with gold leaf, and one party received a personalised celebration dessert. Reviewers describe the service as friendly and attentive, and the cocktails as well made. The caveats come from a few visitors. One found the veal dry and unseasoned and the dishes arriving within minutes, and had to ask for condiments. That reviewer also found no live music on a Tuesday and loud groups, and reports two men leaving the ladies toilet. Another found the room a bit dark and half empty. One reviewer describes the prices as a premium. A diner who arrived without a reservation was seated and stayed for the music.

“Everything about this meal was spectacular. The atmosphere in the room is perfectly set with those warm, glowing red lamps that make the whole space feel so intimate and inviting. It is truly a lovely place for a special night out. Every dish we tried was plated with such care. The desserts were especially beautiful, particularly the chocolate tart adorned with a delicate touch of gold leaf. We had a wonderful time and cannot wait to return for another dinner.”

“Classic spot for delicious Italian fare - we loved the agnolotti, the bolognese, the tagliolini with truffle, the pizza and the cheesecake and Ferrero rocher desserts. Good service by the team, we especially appreciated the personalised dessert (as we were there for a celebration). The decor is intimate albeit a bit too dark at times and the tables were half empty, which made it a bit on the quieter side - that said, we really enjoyed the live music, and will be back on a more lively night!”
