About Well Bean Co - Café

Well Bean Co - Café is a plant-based cafe at 1-2 Upper Dock Walk in London, beside the water at Royal Albert Wharf. It has funded mental health projects since 2017, and its furniture and fixings are reclaimed and recycled. The menu is vegan, with oat milk as the default in drinks. Coffee comes alongside matcha and adaptogen options, and the hot chocolate is made in a lux variant and a Belgian one. On the food side, the truffle bagel sits next to a breakfast bagel and a cheese bagel, and carrot cake is sold by the slice. Inside is spacious, and an upstairs area has sofas, floor mats, laptop cables and plenty of greenery, set up for working, reading or group brunches. The cafe is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Bagels draw the most mentions, from the truffle bagel described as full of flavour and umami to a cheese bagel and a breakfast bagel. Close behind is the hot chocolate, with one reviewer calling the lux version the creamiest and thickest they have had in London and another praising the Belgian one. Flat whites, matcha, carrot cake and banana cake with ginger and nutmeg also earn praise, and the plant-based menu uses oat milk by default. Reviewers describe a cosy, green, spacious room with sofas, laptop cables and a riverside view, and several call the staff friendly, including one who helped a group of 17. Service draws the sharpest complaints. One regular says repeated requests for espresso in a cup were refused and a refund followed, and a later visit saw flat whites left in paper cups while staff chatted. Another paid for a large iced latte that held two tiny ice cubes and was told there was not enough ice. A third reports children banging on tables while staff said nothing.

“I decided to write this review because the service at Wellbean has dropped massively in the last few months. It's a shame because it's part of the Royal Albert Wharf but it feels like lately the staff doesn't care about customers. A few weeks ago I came to the Wellbean for a coffee and a pastel de nata with my husband. We were doing to seat in so I asked for the espresso to be served in a cup, not paper cup. I said it a few times and the lady that works there kept saying that she was alone and couldn't serve me a cup (not even eye contact) but I said that as I don't drink espresso in paper cups I'd appreciate if she served in a cup. Result: when I came to pick up my coffee it was in a paper cup. I asked again and she said no, so I asked for the refund. She couldn't care less. I've been coming here since I moved to Royal Albert Wharf five years ago, and I'd expect a bit more care for customers. I didn't ask for anything outstanding, just basic service when you had a coffee (not on the go). Today, come here for breakfast, a flat white and a butter croissant, again, served in paper cup, and when my husband asked for a the coffee to be in a mug, they put it to the side and left it there.... 5 minutes later we had to go as ask for the coffee as the two ladies were just chatting and we realised that they ignored us, our coffee was still in the paper cups on the side. They start laughing and then just poured the flat whites to a cup. You can see the image of how that looks. It's a shame because over the five years living here I always tried to come here regularly, but I think this will be the last time. If you want to have a coffee, go to Starbucks near the Gallions Reach DLR station. At least they're friendly and care about their customers.”

“Shop is very nicely located next to the water love the adaptogen coffees idea very original kudos on that! and place is big as well one can work from there really cool! Problem is that all thos good things can be so easily overshadowed by weak customer service… What I didnt like on one of those very hot days was when I paid for my large Ice latte with two 2 tiny cubes of ice and when I raised the issue to one of the ladies she said they don’t have enough Ice…That’s not the answer customer should hear, if there is no ice no point doing false advertising without quite important ingredient. No ice don’t sell Iced coffees, if you want more ice go to Iceland get loads of ice or even can get extra small ice machine easy! But telling me that I paid for something that its not really and I should just suck it up is VERY WEAK customer service…please don’t false advertise guys if you don’t have something just say we don’t have easy as that…”

“We came here for a post parkrun brunch. The Truffle bagels are devine - full of flavour and umami goodness. The carrot cake is light, moist and deliciously spiced. Lovely coffee too. Nice ambient vbe to the place, with plenty of space. Lovely, friendly staff. Highly recommend”

“We arranged to come here due to the perfect location for a brunch as a group of 17 people on a trip to London. I emailed and spoke with the manager who was super accommodating and arranged for us to hire out the upstairs which was perfect for all of us. The staff when we arrived were so helpful and friendly - dealing with 17 people all ordering food and coffees etc. everything was ready really promptly and smoothly. Was the perfect place the come! Thank you so much for being amazing and hosting us! The food was all delicious as was the coffee, we couldn’t recommend more. And I think lots of the London based people are planning on returning!”

“A relaxing and enjoyable site with a lovely view of the riverside opposite to it. It's one of my favourite locations to do a writing retreat when it's away from the city landscape. I enjoy their Belgium Hot Chocolate and their Breakfast bagel.”
