About The Lagoon

Inside Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London, The Lagoon is a canteen serving people visiting or staying at the hospital, open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The kitchen works in a canteen style, with home-style cooking in hearty portions and vegetarian options on the menu. Plates run from an English Breakfast and a chef's breakfast special through Roast Turkey and Noodles with Stir Fried Greens, with hot puddings such as Apple Crumble and Custard to finish. Themed menus come round on rotation, so the choice changes. Service is walk-in throughout, and the room suits both a quick grab-and-go visit and a sit-down meal. A separate coffee bar handles hot drinks, including a hazelnut latte, alongside hot and cold food.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers split sharply on the staff, and that is the recurring complaint. Several describe staff who bark orders, come across as rude and condescending, and show little understanding of what parents are going through, while others call the same staff friendly. On the food, the hot puddings are the most specific draw, with one reviewer calling them decent and cheap, and the breakfast is described as surprisingly good, including a chef's breakfast special. One reviewer praises the hazelnut latte, and others mention big hearty portions of home style food, themed menus, and a coffee bar with hot and cold options. Many call the prices reasonable, though others rate the food as standard canteen fare and meh, with vegetarian dishes described as tasting pointless. One coeliac parent reports having only a sandwich available for an entire stay, no gluten free jacket potato or salad, and a chef who seemed unfamiliar with the request, leaving them on crisps and snacks. One reviewer also mentions a Disney play area.

“The food is ok, but the staff working there are not friendly at all. I stopped eating at this place mainly because of how the staff behave.”

“Food is very meh. Price is not bad. The hot puddings are very decent and only £1.40. Vegetarian options are there but taste pointless And the staff!! Goodness me. The odd smiley friendly one. But the rest look and behave like they are ready to strangle you. Used the canteen breakfast lunch and dinner was an inpatient. So overall food doesn’t taste the best. But kind of did the job to fill a starved tummy”

“The Canteen would be a lovely relaxing place to eat your food but I must say the staff put you off from going. They bark orders instead of asking politely with no empathy or understanding of what parents may be feeling or going through. My …”

“There was nothing but a sandwich for me to eat for our whole stay at GOSH for coeliacs. Many options for people who CHOOSE a different diet, but none for people who have no choice. I couldn't be the support my child needed because I was living off of crisps and snacks with no proper meal for days as we could not leave the hospital. Absolutely appalling. Not even a salad or jacket potato. The chef himself had zero knowledge on the matter and actually pulled a face when asked if he can at least do a jacket potato gluten free. Shocked. How are parents supposed to support poorly vulnerable children?”
  • Timothy Cakebread
“Always a great range of food options served by friendly staff. Given the pressure the restaurant must be under the food is reasonably priced and tasty. They often have themed menus. The coffee bar is also reasonably priced with a good select of hot and cold food. There is always a good atmosphere”
