About Double six cafe

Double six cafe is a traditional greasy-spoon cafe at 66 Eversholt St in London, around the side of Euston Station and about a 5-minute walk from it. The main offering is the English breakfast, a set meal where you choose your option. Fried bread comes with it, served alongside mushrooms or in place of hash brown. Cappuccino and tea are poured to go with the fry-up. Vintage decor fills the room, and a TV is often on in the back room. There is plenty of seating, and the cafe works on a walk-in basis.

Customer Review Summary

Most reviewers come for the traditional English breakfast, and the fried bread is the detail raised most often. One praises it as not greasy and a welcome alternative to hash brown, and another pairs it with mushrooms. Others describe hot bacon, a runny yolk, portions too big to finish, and a very hot cappuccino. Diners repeatedly call the prices reasonable and the staff friendly. A few mention fast service and a proper greasy spoon feel without the stench of grease. One reviewer calls the seating plentiful and the place clean and well maintained, while a regular calls the decor vintage. The dissent is sharp. One reviewer describes a Sunday with too few staff for the crowd, a room that felt old and neglected and in need of refurbishment, and food that was only okay. Another opinion, quoted within a review, found the chips barely introduced to the fryer and the sausage and bacon cheap, though the tea was good. Even the critical Sunday visitor called the lady working there friendly and polite.

“There is room for a traditional breakfast! "Rather than a deep-rooted historical landmark, it functions as a dependable, old-school neighborhood fixture known for serving hearty fry-ups, standard comfort food, and tea to local workers, commuters, and cabbies over several decades." The quote above is one of many, l found on various social media sites. While some are specifically looking for a story " Will it be cheap crap straight from the freezer?" l am sure with that kind of quote they got what they were looking for. "I really wanted a proper mug of tea alongside a proper breakfast. " 🍵 " what to say, chips barely introduced to the fryer, cheap sausage and bacon... a poor breakfast. The tea was good though. " This reviewer normally reviews restaurants and up market venues. They will have walked passed high end commercial places to eat before they got to Double six. They had a specific agenda. While others on Google are genuinely fond of this cafe, "affordable, no nonsense, traditional, serving the workers, weary nomads, no frills or overpriced jargon." It is even mentioned and recommended by The Londonist. Where this cafe is situated it is going through a serious gentrification. "Eversholt street by Euston Station is undergoing a slow, debated process of commercial regeneration and office modernisation." While traditional cafes are being squeezed out of up and coming areas like Euston, as their premises are often in desired spots for commercial chains. And the explosion of social media, where people are not only hungry for food, but hungry for content. I have known this cafe for years, its always been a haven to retreat from the station before l travel. It provides exactly what it sets out to do. An affordable Breakfast. And that's it. The decor is classed now days as vintage, which is part of its charm. As an artist we thrive on real honest places like this. There is a new owner who is welcoming. A TV in the backroom is often on. And it's constabulary busy with local people, builders, taxi drivers, 🚕 etc. Its a cafe for the community. Not a commercial chain. I am delighted to see the vast number of articles on social media, some favor double six and others don't. But if you are not a fan of clinical overdesigned outlets and need a place that's is part of Eustons history, then this is the place for you. Just to give you a bit of further info what this cafe is up against check out this academic paper: researchgate.net 2019 "Euston Station redevelopment; regeneration or gentrification? " by Robin Hickman worth a read. Lets keep these gems of London alive. There is always room for affordable breakfasts.”

“We very much enjoyed our breakfast at Double Six after getting off the train at Euston. Our waitress was lovely, cafe was a proper greasy spoon (without the stench of grease!), prices decent, and portions generous. Everything was very tasty and very well cooked (particularly enjoyed the fried bread and mushroom combo). I would definitely visit when next in London! Best little cafe of this type I've found in London!”

“Great food, very reasonable prices and friendly staff. A non fussy, excellent breakfast. We are aussie and it was exactly what we were craving. Too much to finish. Cappuccino was good and super hot.”
