About Bloomsbury Café

Bloomsbury Café is a student-union-run cafe in London, on the upper ground floor of the Bloomsbury Theatre building. It occupies a corner of a student building, so table space is limited. The counter serves Americano and espresso coffee, plus hot chocolate for those who want something other than coffee. The pastry selection includes seasonal bakes and cinnamon hot cross buns. Cold sandwiches and fruit are on hand for a quick bite. The cafe opens Monday to Friday and stays closed on Saturdays and Sundays, with an earlier closing time outside term. Payment at the counter is by card only, and cash is not accepted.

“Excellent pastry and snack choices, including seasonal pastries. Excellent service and the choice options overall exceed the UCL average. Can be quite busy during lunch time though.”

“The best Americano in London bar none. The cinnamon hot cross buns are a grown up treat. Alma is a smart and friendly barista. I wish we had this in Toronto.”

“It's as expected from a tiny corner in a student building. I loved the chocolate muffins. The Americano was smooth and nice. Staff needs to smile a bit more. They seem like on a rush with no reason.”

“While my friends and I were purchasing coffee, the staff member exhibited impatience and rudeness. I had just placed my order and hadn't had a chance to pay before the staff member walked away to start the coffee machine. Upon her return, I attempted to hand her the money in notes, but she dismissively and rudely stated, "No, can't do it, ask your friend," accompanied by a disdainful look and forcefully pressing the buttons to stop the machine. Throughout the interaction, I felt uncomfortable and angered. I am unsure if this treatment is related to my Chinese ethnicity, as I've heard of other instances where Chinese individuals have experienced similar rudeness, as evident in Google Maps reviews. Such behavior is entirely contrary to the standards expected in the service industry. At the very least, the staff member should have maintained respect and explained the situation politely, given that it was my first visit. I did not intend to pay in cash, and the lack of clarification at the entrance regarding cash payments was not my fault. I am deeply disappointed and fail to comprehend why a cafe under the student union exhibits such a poor service attitude. Feeling disrespected has left me quite upset, to the point where I am contemplating seeking psychological counseling. My friends also share my dissatisfaction with the staff's behavior, and we have decided not to patronize the school's cafes in the future.”

“The managing staff are always rude and passive aggressive. The coffee is also really bad as they do not know how to use the machines properly for different types of coffee. The prices are fine.”

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the coffee, with the Americano called smooth and one reviewer naming it the best in London, while the espresso is described as good most of the time and inexpensive. Close behind are the baked goods, including chocolate muffins, cinnamon hot cross buns and seasonal pastries, plus cold sandwiches and fruit for a quick bite and hot chocolates and cakes for a family stop. Coffee quality is split, though. One reviewer says the staff do not know how to use the machines for different drinks, and another calls it the worst coffee they have had. Table space is described as very limited, and lunchtime and term time get busy. Service draws the sharpest complaints. Several describe staff as rushed, rude or passive aggressive. Two reviewers report being treated disrespectfully as Chinese students, one after a cash payment was refused and they were told to ask a friend, the other after asking for regular milk and being told the café never says that. Others found the barista friendly, with a black coffee made immediately after opening.
