About The Coffee Carriage

On Station Rd in Liverpool, The Coffee Carriage is an independent coffee shop set at Maghull train station, giving passengers and passers-by a stop for coffee on the way through. The small, cafe-sized premises serves coffee alongside a variety of cakes, and offers afternoon tea with sandwiches, homemade sausage rolls, and scones. Drinks come either as takeaway cups or in real cups for those staying to sit in. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance allows visitors with mobility needs to come in easily, and dogs are welcome inside. It opens daily during the day only, and reservations are recommended given the compact space. Being independent rather than part of a chain, the cafe runs on its own hours and format at the station.

Customer Review Summary

Afternoon tea draws the most praise here, with reviewers repeatedly calling out the sandwiches, homemade sausage rolls and scones as a standout, and several urging others to get booked in for it. Close behind, the coffee and cakes come up often too, with a cappuccino and a brownie both singled out as well presented and delicious, and the cafe itself described as clean and warm. Staff are mentioned again and again as friendly and welcoming, with a couple of reviewers even naming hosts they felt made customers feel like family. That said, not every visit lands the same: one reviewer balked at paying £4.90 for what they called a small glass of "nesquick" milkshake and found their sausage roll only half warm, and another describes a long wait for food and drinks they felt were overpriced for the size of the place. Even so, most describe leaving having ordered a second or third round of afternoon tea, calling it good value and worth returning for.

“I like this place. I was a bit early for a meeting so found this place as I stepped off the train. I'm not usually overly impressed by train station facilities, but this place offers really nice coffee in real cups (Takeaway cups if you're taking away!) and a variety of cakes etc. The staff are really friendly, and there was a great atmosphere with plenty of custom. Spotlessly clean, this is obviously an independent and not a "Costa" type chain. Prices are actually decent for the standard of premises, coffee and cakes. I wasn't expecting anything at Maghull station, but what a pleasant surprise this place is! Give them your custom, as it's obvious these people really care about what they are doing.”
