About San's Cafe
San's Cafe on Lightbody St serves a menu that pairs a typical greasy-spoon café lineup, including fried breakfasts and sarnies, with home-made Chinese dishes such as Wor Tip dumplings and chop suey rolls. The full breakfast comes with two rounds of toast and tea or coffee, while chow mein and spring rolls round out the Chinese side of the menu. Chips are served frozen rather than home-made. Each table has its own tissue roll, and the owner comes out to talk with customers while they eat. The cafe opens daily and runs on a walk-in basis, with payment taken in cash only. Parking directly outside is limited.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers come mainly for the home made Chinese food, and the Wor Tip dumplings with their crispy bottoms and juicy filling draw the most praise. Close behind are the chop suey, including the chop suey roll, and a chow mein with tender beef and thin noodles that weren't overcooked. Salt and pepper chicken gets credit for its crispy batter and tender meat, though one reviewer wanted more seasoning, and it pairs with the Malaysian chilli sauce. Spring rolls are called perfectly done, and a full breakfast with toast and tea or coffee also gets a mention. Several describe a friendly owner who stops to chat, and one reviewer with a partner who has a nut allergy liked that no nut dishes are served. Others are more critical. One calls it standard UK Chinese food and finds the prices not cheap, another found the menu basic with small portions and a lot of salt or MSG, and a third felt the atmosphere lacked warmth with minimal staff interaction. Another reviewer, by contrast, describes a huge portion, with the one complaint being frozen chips instead of home made.

“Went for a late lunch on Friday. Cafe was spotless I did have some anxiety regarding hygiene rating from the council a while back but I found no issues the place was immaculate and no cafe smells at all no greasy surfaces. Each table has a big roll of tissue to wipe your hands etc 10/10 for cleanliness. I ordered the chopsuey see photos looked and tasted amazing. Chips were frozen chips I would have preferred home made but they weren't too bad anyway. Service and friendliness of the staff was great had a bit of banter and a big smiley San served me at my table in person which was a lovely touch. I didn't have a problem parking right outside. I thought the prices were a little expensive but when I got my meal it was huge portion and ingredients were plentiful and tasty and you get what you pay for overall good value. Lived the exterior paint work and great vibe to the place well worth a visit”

“My first time here, visiting the new everton stadium. Food was great and Lin is amasing, i saw this cafe on the Hairy Bikers and it was worth the visit.”

“Not bad at all. Good simple Chinese fare in what’s essentially a greasy spoon cafe that’s seen better days. Not great value for money but that’s symbolic of the times we live in. Not somewhere you’d go on a date either! But it’s not a bad choice at all and yeah probably deserves the hidden gem tag.”

“Good selection of food. We had a full breakfast each which includes 2x toast and tea or coffee for £12. We also bought the famous chop suey roll each. The café is quiet enough to chat. The owner was such a lovely lady and talked to us about the café and how long she's kept it up. We will be returning for evening food.”
