About Grub & Gumption

Grub & Gumption is a cafe in Littlehampton at 126 Sea Rd, where breakfast and lunch menus run alongside themed evenings and supper clubs. A "brown reel" menu changes every 4-6 weeks with seasonal specials, shaped by the team's travels around the world. Breakfast includes the Maple Bacon Melt, a bacon sandwich, and a vegetarian breakfast. The wider menu covers sandwiches, flatbreads and salads, among them a seeded sourdough toasted sandwich, with cakes and treats for something sweet. Ingredients come from a nearby butcher, baker and coffee roaster. Vegetarian and gluten free options are listed, and the kitchen makes a vegan breakfast by substituting items. Private events are also hosted. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return for the coffee, and several pair it with breakfast, naming the vegan English breakfast with roasted tomato and mushrooms, the Maple Bacon Melt, a seeded sourdough toasted sandwich and poached eggs cooked to perfection. Close behind is the staff, described again and again as friendly and helpful, with one vegan diner noting that items were swapped without fuss and a team member flagged that the sweetener was not vegan. Others mention the almond croissant, cakes and treats that kids love, gluten free options, and local ingredients from nearby suppliers. The outside seating gets praise for morning sun. The main caveat is cost and space: one reviewer found the food a little pricey and the layout awkward, saying smaller tables or a different arrangement could fit more customers. Another notes a wait when the cafe was hot, busy and short staffed, though they felt the food justified it. One regular family says they will keep coming back, and a visiting couple celebrated a wedding anniversary brunch there.

“Had the Maple Bacon Melt, potentially the best bacon sandwich I’ve ever had. Service was quick, and all the staff were super friendly. And the music on the radio was exactly to my taste, always love when a bit of Paolo Nutini plays :) if you haven’t tried the food here, I would highly recommend. Yet another win for East Preston.”

“Cannot fault this place. The two young lads, one on the till taking the orders & the one making the coffee's. They put other youngsters to shame. 5 stars 4 u both. The rest of the staff can't fault, it was hot, busy & under pressure cause of staff shortages. Food was amazing, had to wait but that was worth it. Keep up the good work. Everything worth the tip I left. Thank you for making our Wedding Anniversary breakfast/brunch special. M&J (Rustington)”

“Lovely cafe with great coffee and brunch/ lunch options. I’ve most had their breakfasts and everything they make is delicious with lots of options. Also lots of lovely cakes and treats which our kids love. The staff are always friendly and helpful. We are regulars and will be back.”

“I am in town for a couple of months for work, and if I could pick this place up and take it back home with me, I would... I came in for the all day breakfast first, as I saw they offered a vegetarian breakfast. I asked for them to just not give me a couple of the items (as I am vegan and could not eat them) and without a beat, they substituted them with more of the other things so that I was not without the amount of food I would have received. That in itself would have been enough of a lovely gesture, but the overall attitude of the staff was so warm and welcoming that I felt like a regular from the first time I walked in the door! The food - that was another level. Without question, the BEST vegan English breakfast I have EVER had. Hands down. In a lot of places, the tomato and mushrooms are bland fillers that are more like a second thought to the plate. Here, they were roasted and flavourful. I could have eaten a whole dish of them. Today I came in for a coffee to go. The lovely lady who helped me, remembered I was vegan, and when I asked for sweetener, she let me know that they type they have is not vegan - she had looked into it previously and wanted to make sure I knew. I would have had no idea! They are looking for another brand currently to accommodate. This is not a vegan or vegetarian restaurant mind you, so that kind of thoughtfulness is hugely appreciated. The coffee is delicious as well.... Absolutely, no question - 5 stars all around - I will miss this place when I head home!”
