About The Square Orange Café

The Square Orange Café is a cafe in Keswick at 20 St John's St, built around stone-baked pizzas, including a special topped with Cumbrian sausage, brie and cranberry sauce. The pizza menu is numbered, and a BBQ pulled pork pizza sits on it alongside a vegan pizza made with vegan cheese. Tapas for sharing round out the food, and the bar pours draft beers from the Lake District, with coffee and cake on the same list. Seating is a main area plus booths at the back and in the lower part of the premises. The cafe takes walk-ins only, and a queue or wait for a table is usual at peak times, when the team takes names. All the cooking comes from a single oven beside the bar in a small space.

Customer Review Summary

Pizza is what reviewers return to most, from the pulled pork stone-baked pizza and the #12 to a special topped with Cumbrian sausage, brie and cranberry sauce, with several praising the unusual topping combinations and the vegan cheese option. Close behind are the tapas, where diners name prawns, Cantabrian anchovies, vine leaves, padron peppers and meatballs, along with sticky toffee pudding. Draft beers from the Lake District and coffee also draw praise, and several describe the staff as polite and helpful. The main complaint is the crowding. Reviewers describe queues for tables, and one says a table was given away after the party left for a walk while waiting. Another found the booths tiny and cramped until moved to the main seating area, and one notes it was hot, though fans were provided. One reviewer felt better pizza can be found locally, and a few suggest going early. One group of four was squeezed in despite the crowd.

“We visited on a Mobday evening and had a 20 minute wait for a table, which in indicative of how popular the cafe is. Staff were very polite and attentive and the pizza was very good. Atmosphere was good and the decor and furnishings fit the vibe. This would have been a five star review had we not initially been seated in a booth, as they are tiny, cramped and uncomfortable however, after asking to be moved to the main seating area, we were accomodated. Will we return? Yes. Did we enjoy the pizza? Yes, but there is "better" pizza to be had elsewhere, locally (in our opinion). I ate a slice before taking the pucture! Would we recommen the cafe? Yes.”

“Came for the coffee, stayed for the pizza... We came here after a day of walking to rest up and have drinks. However, the food looked so promising and we had this lovely quiet spot in the booths at the back of the place, so we also ordered pizzas. They didn't disappoint! I had a vegan one and it was delightful. The toppings were well thought out and the dough was cooked perfectly. We were served by a guy called Leslie and he was so helpful, he made the dinner a great experience for us both. Hopefully we'll be back!”

“What a gem! I was so impressed with this place. The staff are incredible and deal with the queues really well. Offering drinks to our tab while we waited was a great idea (only waited around 10-15 mins in rush hour dinner time). The food was so delicious (big shoutout to the pardon peppers, chorizo, sticky toffee pudding and #12 pizza). Jenna is a machine in the kitchen – managing all the orders herself without leaving customers waiting!). What an amazing team of people and such an atmospheric place for dinner. Big kudos.”

“We loved this place! The food was super good and tasty (we had some tapas and pizza!) and we loved that they had plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. The vegan cheese for a pizza was especially great (not necessarily the cheese, though it wasn't bad, but that they offered it at all!). The place itself was super cute and quirky. It was a bit crowded when we came and we are four, but they squeezed us in, which was lovely. A bit hot but plenty of fans. Great, friendly service!”

“This is a restaurant that offers very special local beers and This is a delicious tapas restaurant. There are many styles of beer to choose from, and many of them are fresh draft beers made in the Lake District. You must not miss it. The main dish is of course the freshly made pizza. Likewise, they have many styles, so there is definitely one for you. While drinking and chatting with friends, you can also choose from several TAPAS to share the joy together. It is definitely a good choice for celebrating the holidays.”
