About The Black Jug
The Black Jug is a pub and restaurant at 31 North St in Horsham, with a lounge that holds antiques and original Edwardian features. Old prints and photos cover the walls, and ceramic bottles sit on shelves around the room. Behind the bar, real ales and draught ales sit alongside a range of ciders, including local Silly Moo cider on tap, and a malt whisky selection. The kitchen works from a seasonal menu that lists fish and chips, chicken and leek pie and fishcakes, and it has also run a burger week. Sunday roast is served until late evening. Dogs are welcome, and a water bowl is provided for them.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the food and friendly staff, with the fish and chips singled out for fresh fish in crisp batter. Others name the nut roast, roast beef dinner, haddock and salmon fishcakes, and a chicken curry with coconut rice, served hot and promptly. Drinks come close behind: real ales, ciders including the local Silly Moo, and malt whiskies behind the bar. Groups describe attentive service at a birthday meal and a company Christmas dinner, and one reviewer's dog was given a bowl of water. Criticism is limited but specific. One diner found the lid of the chicken and leek pie too hard to eat and the tortellini on the cold side, and said no one asked how the meal was. Another thought the truffle fries portion was very small and was told it was the usual size. At the company dinner, every plate was licked clean.

“Had a joint family celebration and birthday meal for 18 people. The pub were attentive and easy to communicate with in the build up to the day. The selection of food during burger week and the choices of ales and lagers catered for everyone. We cannot fault the service or the attentiveness of the team on the day and we will definitely be celebrating future events at The Black Jug.”

“We have eaten here a number of times and it’s been great. However it’s been 8 months since we have been and tonight was very mixed. In summary bar staff were excellent restaurant staff and food was poor. It started good with the bar staff being attentive and showing us our table. However having been sat for almost 1 minute we were asked by the restaurant staff if we were ready to order. We obviously were not and asked for 5 mins. Starters were good not fancy but solid and good chorizo/ peppers and crispy beef. It was from there it went down. We wanted to order wine but didn’t have a chance when ordering the food as waitress was off before we could. My main course was the chicken and leek pie. Sounded good but the concrete like lid on the pie wasn’t edible and pie contents were lacking a little the best part was the mash unfortunately. My wife had the tortellini, which in her words was ok but on the cold side. Nothing special. Over hearing the staff moaning was also not what you want when you eat. We were never asked if everything was ok with the meal. I also commented when they took the plates that the pie was hard but no response. It seemed no one was bothered. A shame as black jug has always been a staple for us. Sorry no tip tonight.”

“The pub is half way between the railway station and the town centre. The interior is most interesting with huge collections of old prints and photos on the walls and ceramic bottles on shelves around the lounge. In addition, there is an impressive selection of malt whiskies behind the bar, and a good selection of draught real ales. Food not commented on as we did not eat here.”

“Absolutely fabulous lunch, a great choice of Ciders and Beers, local Silly Moo cider, which is tip top. Food was outstanding. Well presented and full of flavour. Our dog was welcome and water in a bowl supplied for her. We will definitely be back. Thank you.”

“We treated ourselves to Christmas Day lunch as just the two of us this year & although pricey ( they presumably pay staff double time for working Christmas Day?), it was a wonderful experience! The food was delicious, the service attentive but unhurried (we needed a long pause between our main course & pudding!!) and the noise level was well moderated with no background music and no drinkers standing at the bar. Thanks to all the staff for making it truly special!!”
