About Heart of Northumberland
Heart of Northumberland is a pub in Hexham, found at 5 Market St and open daily. It occupies a restored building with a log burner in the dining area. The kitchen puts an onion bhaji burger on the menu next to Hexhamshire bangers and mash, so the choice runs from a burger with fries to a plate of local sausages. The Sunday roast comes with a choice of lamb or beef, plus a Yorkshire pudding, gravy and vegetables. At the bar, hand pull beer includes Timmy Taylors. Dogs are welcome, and the team brings a water bowl to the table. Walk-ins are seated without a booking.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the Sunday roast, with lamb and beef both singled out as large, well-cooked portions served with a big Yorkshire pudding, plenty of gravy and fresh veg. Close behind is how dog-friendly the pub is: several mention a log burner and a water bowl brought to the table. Other dishes praised include the onion bhaji burger, rib of beef, steak, Hexhamshire bangers and mash, and crumble with custard. The hand pull beer and a well-kept Timothy Taylors also earn mentions, and staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming. The main criticism comes from one diner who found the Asian chicken wings too dry, along with a cheeseburger patty that was slightly dry but rescued by its sauce. One reviewer also says adult meals cost a bit more. Walk-ins on a Sunday were seated immediately, and one pair of roast plates arrived within minutes.

“Wonderful find in Hexham: really dog friendly, helpful and kind staff, superb food and great value. Staff seemed to genuinely care that everything was right for us, and it was a great menu - we enjoyed the steak and the Hexhamshire bangers and mash followed by crumble of the week and custard just hit the spot perfectly - thank you.”

“I discovered this last year having been driven in during a severe downpour. So, it was my first choice today. A sausage sandwich and a roast meat sandwich, which come with chips and a salad. We shared them between three of us as we are having a large family meal later. Three hours afterwards and I'm still not remotely hungry. The atmosphere is welcoming, the food is delicious, the hand pull beer is a delight. The staff are helpful and attentive.”

“We went because it was dog friendly and it did not disappoint! Even brought a water bowl to the table when I said our dog was a big drinker. The portion sizes are great in my opinion. Children's menu very reasonable pricing, adult meas a bit more expensive but very high quality. I had the onion bhaji burger and it was amazing! Service very nice too.”

“Turned up with no booking on Sunday and was met by lovely staff and very welcoming. Asked for table for 2 and was still serving Sunday dinner and have to say one of the best Sunday roasts we have had. I had the lamb and wife had the beef, the portions was nice and large and food was fantastic. Only here on holiday for a week but will be back before we leave and this time with the dog since there dog friendly. Well run and lovely food won’t be disappointed here.”
