About Alfies Fish Bar & Pizzeria

Alfies Fish Bar & Pizzeria is a fish and chips takeaway at 1 Gateside St in Hamilton, open daily and evenings only. The menu sets a pizza crunch supper beside the fish suppers, and the fish suppers are offered halal, so customers who eat halal can order them. Chips come chunky, and curry sauce is available as an accompaniment. A sausage supper sits on the same menu, and regular pizza is there for anyone who wants it instead of a supper. Orders come in smaller and full portions.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips draw the most praise, with reviewers describing chunky chips that are not too greasy and fish called excellent, including halal fish suppers one diner is glad to find. The pizza crunch supper comes close behind, along with regular pizza, and one reviewer notes the curry sauce has a surprising kick. Several describe friendly service and fair prices, and one suggests ringing ahead for large orders. The complaints are specific. Two reviewers say food is not ready when the shop opens or in the early evening, so a takeaway turns into a wait. One long-time regular objects that staff ask about salt and vinegar at ordering and bag the food out of sight, leaving tasteless chips and fish. Another threw out over half the chips from a sausage supper and found staff unfriendly. A white pudding supper arrived as black pudding, which that reviewer says has happened before.

“Can't fault the food, absolutely delicious and fair pricing. My issue is they never have anything ready. It opens at 4pm and when you go in nothing is cooked, then after 20 minutes waiting the food starts appearing. Start cooking earlier so when you open at 4pm the food is ready to be served. Its not really difficult. I've also been in at 6pm and no fish cooked so have to wait yet again. I'm all for freshly cooked food but i wont be returning again. The idea is take away so you go in, order food and leave a couple minutes later with my food. If i want to wait 10 or 20 minutes for my food I'll go to a restaurant”

“The fish and chips are amazing the service is really good and it’s only £23.90 for 1 single fish and chips and 1 double fish and chips with 3 curry sauces.”

“Hate to say it but won’t be back. This has been my regular chip shop for 8 years. The chippy is busy which is great for the owners but the service has just not been the same the last few times & after tonight we definitely won’t return. Standard practice in a chip ship is order your food & then when it’s packaged your asked for salt vinegar etc, always been this way in Alfie’s too. The place is too busy so the staff are asking when you order if you want salt & vinegar then you stand waiting. It’s then handed to you in a bag. Everyone has different tastes or maybe requires extra salt/vinegar you don’t get a chance to see your food as it’s packed it’s just thrown together however & handed to you. I actually fancied sauce whilst I was waiting & again it’s handed in a bag wrapped you don’t get the chance to even ask to add a pickle. It should be packaged in front of you so you have the chance to ask for condiments to your preference so you can add accordingly. People will say this is a ridiculous comment the owners won’t care as the shop is busy but it’s the difference in enjoying your meal or not enjoying it. Half the chips & the fish I ordered were tasteless it was hardly salted & hardly any vinegar. You should be asked as it’s being wrapped. Just trying to save time when you order & rush customers out the door. Paying full price for a backwards service. I’ve just moved back to Hamilton & even travelled from Motherwell for the last 4 years to use Alfie’s but won’t be back.”

“Very disappointed tonight, ordered fish supper, was good, but also ordered white pudding supper, opened packaging it was a BLACK pudding, not the first time this has happened, the white pudding was for my husband, he ate a little bit of the black pudding only. Sorry don't think I will be back in a hurry.”
