About Chequers Inn

Chequers Inn is a restaurant and country inn on Main St in Grantham, set in a 17th-century building with log fireplaces and exposed brickwork. The inn has four double, en suite guestrooms, and breakfast is included with the stay. The menu includes a Sunday roast with a choice of beef, chicken or pork, and a burger from the Classics menu served with triple-cooked fries. The bar pours beers on tap and cocktails, and the wine list is large. A garden room works as a private dining space for groups, and the venue hosts weddings with canapés. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the Sunday roast, with the pork and beef singled out alongside the gravy and pudding, and a family of 13 describing beef, chicken and pork roasts as tasty and plentiful. Close behind are the burger and fish and chips, which one family said even their fussy eater cleared, plus desserts like the chocolate toffee tart. Others praise the pigeon with curry lentils, the pork belly, the cocktails, and a large wine and beer list. Weddings and the private garden room draw warm comments about attentive staff, and one party seated late after a lost booking said the team handled it calmly. The recurring complaints are about the kitchen and cost. One diner called the soups dish water before staff replaced them, another found a small lamb portion lacking seasoning, and a third reported burnt food and drinks arriving halfway through the meal. Several compare prices to central London. One reviewer who booked ahead at 5pm on a Thursday still found the place nearly full.

“Nice little quaint country pub. Good selection of beers on tap. I had the Kronbacher which was a fantastic beer and along which some nuts. Two pint was around £13 - slightly on the pricer side however its made up for a nice and peaceful atmosphere along with friendly bar staff. We sat outside in the garden which was nice and comfortable. However I did notice a rat was poking around the fence near the road!”

“Lovely pub, with a few rooms, good size rooms with a beautiful comfy king-size bed. Loved the home made biscuits. All the staff were super friendly and helpful. A great selection of cocktails which were lovely. Food was cooked really well, the pigeon and curry lentils a great earthy flavours , pork belly succulent and soft. Just a couple of minor tweaks to make it perfect skin on sea bass needs to be crispy, although cokking was good. Portion sizes are good came away without space for desert. And all for a very reasonable price. Oh and breakfast which was included in the price of the stay was very good.”

“First bit of advice: book ahead! We arrived at the Chequers Inn at around 5pm on a Thursday, thinking we'd have absolutely no problem getting a table that early. We were wrong! They managed to squeeze the four of us in, but only just – and having eaten there, I completely understand why it's so popular. Laura and I both went for the burger from the Classics menu, and it was absolutely delicious. A proper, beautifully cooked burger with what I believe were triple-cooked fries, which were fantastic. The children's meals were equally impressive. Arthur ordered the kids' burger, although calling it a kids' burger seems slightly ridiculous considering it was big enough for an adult! He demolished the lot. Elsie is our fussy eater and chose the fish and chips. The best review I can possibly give them is that she cleared practically the entire plate. The only casualties were the green peas! Dessert somehow managed to be just as good. I had the chocolate toffee tart, Laura had the lemon and strawberry mille-feuille, Elsie had the children's brownie and ice cream, and Arthur chose the raspberry and lemon sorbet. Four very different desserts and four very happy people. I didn't particularly fancy a beer that evening, but the wine list is enormous. I went for a Tierra Antica Merlot from Chile, which was delicious and went brilliantly with the burger. Then there's the building itself. The décor is stunning. It's exactly what you want from a proper country inn – full of character, warm and inviting, with a beautiful traditional feel that makes you want to sit there for the evening rather than rush off after you've eaten. The service throughout was fantastic too. Despite clearly being extremely busy, we were looked after brilliantly from start to finish. There really isn't much more you can ask for. Five stars for the food, five stars for the setting and five stars for the service. The Chequers Inn is absolutely worth a visit. Just don't make our mistake and assume you'll get a table because it's only 5pm on a Thursday. Book it!”

“We had the most amazing wedding day at The Chequers, Grantham on 31st July, from start to finish! Alice couldn’t have done enough for us. She was always checking in on me while I was getting ready, making sure everything was okay, and even organised a lovely breakfast for us on the morning of the wedding. Her support and attention to detail made such a difference. The venue looked absolutely incredible, and all of the staff were amazing throughout the whole day. The canapés were lovely and the food was absolutely incredible — so many of our guests commented on how fantastic everything was. Communication throughout the planning process was always brilliant. Alice was so helpful with every question we had, organised everything perfectly and was more than happy to work alongside all of our chosen vendors. Everything ran so smoothly, and we genuinely couldn’t fault a thing. We honestly had the best day ever and couldn’t have asked for a more perfect wedding. So many of our guests told us it was the best wedding they had ever been to, which says it all! We would highly recommend The Chequers to anyone looking for the perfect wedding venue. Thank you so much, Alice, and the whole team at The Chequers, for making our wedding day so special and unforgettable! ❤️”

“We’ve attended this pub three times with family, and unfortunately we will not be making the mistake of a fourth visit. The first time we came for my sisters birthday in May 2022 which was an odd experience as they quietly closed the kitchen after the 'lunch time service' while we were still eating and the staff failed to tell us that we wouldn’t be able to order dessert, which we obviously would have done with it being a birthday celebration. They brought out some chocolates to rectify but the mood fell a little flat afterwards. Our second visit in 2023 the female staff members looked us up and down and gave the impression that we were inconveniencing them by being there, with comments along the lines of how busy they were and that they 'might' be able to serve us in the beer garden. Bear in mind that all of inside was EMPTY. Each time I have been the food was burnt. The chef clearly has no concept of timing. Drinks are also extremely slow to arrive. On our last and final visit, they didn’t arrive until we were already halfway through our meal. For what they charge, the experience simply doesn’t seem to match up. The prices seem more central London as opposed to somewhere a stone’s throw away from Grantham. The whole place seems to be very self important. Oh and on our last visit we had to endure listening to some middle aged men sat next to our table discussing which end of a woman’s body they found most attractive. Whilst the location is lovely, the service and whole dining experience is subpar.”
