About The Stag Barkston
The Stag Barkston is a pub on Church St in Grantham, set in a listed building with wooden beams and slate floors. The kitchen runs a main menu with a specials board beside it, covering soup of the day, starters, mains and desserts. Venison appears in several forms, including rump of venison with peppercorn sauce and a venison burger, and a steak and ale pie sits among the other mains. Desserts are homemade, with an Eton mess sundae among them. Sunday lunch is served with roast potatoes and cabbage, and the bar pours a selection of ales. Dogs are welcome in the public bar. Reservations are required. The pub has no car park, with limited street parking in the village and free road parking nearby.

Customer Review Summary
Steak and ale pie is the dish reviewers return to most, described as packed full of meat and one of the best a diner had had. Close behind are the venison rump with peppercorn sauce, a chicken breast with mushroom and tarragon sauce, a vegetarian Wellington with butternut squash and lentils, and the Eton mess sundae. Reviewers point to the specials board, which one says is as large as the main menu, along with homemade desserts, generous portions and a good ale selection. Staff come up as friendly and welcoming, including with young children, and several mention that dogs are welcome in the public bar. The main complaints are small. One diner found the spiced venison burger too dry, another said drinks orders were missed for people already waiting, and a Sunday lunch visitor didn't care for the massive roast potatoes or the large quantity of cabbage. One reviewer also found street parking very limited and had to leave the car further into the village. One group arrived without a booking on a busy Friday before Christmas and was still fitted in.

“Lovely deck with views. Great food. Nice atmosphere. Highly recommend”

“We chose this pub to have dinner purely on the decision that it takes dogs and our expectations were not particularly high. However we were so wrong. The food choices were unusual and interesting. There were 6 of us and we all chose something different- every meal was delicious and cooked to perfection - home made and fresh. I had the vegetarian Wellington which was butternut squash, lentils and almonds which was amazing. My husband had the steak pie and said it was one of the best he’d had. The desserts were homemade too and we all ate more than we should have. Combine all that with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere and there’s little else you could want. My only problem is that we don’t live nearer!”

“We had a lovely Sunday lunch here with family. The menu is impressive (there’s as much on the specials board as the main menu). Two of us had steak and ale pie (lovely) and another had the sirloin salad with chips (fantastic). Large portions and great food, obviously put together by people who care. The bar staff were great too: a young team that made us feel welcome and did a great job. Thoroughly recommended!”

“A super gorgeous pub, decorated beautifully, such cozy and comfortable and yet high class dining atmosphere. The staff were very efficient, kind and friendly. The food was very good, with a good choice on the menu and clearly locally resourced food. They managed to fit us in on a semi busy Friday night leading up to Christmas without a booking and yet we still had an amazing experience. There is free road parking around nearby, such clean and spotless toilets, a really nice bar and generally good value for money.”

“Biked here today, 6th March, from where we are staying at Wagtail Country Park Campsite in our motorhome. Obstacle course, second bridge closed on way as resurfacing. Road closed but, luckily, lovely workmen let us through and carried our bikes to other side. If they hadn’t, it would have been biking up the A1😲. Might have made the 6 o’clock news. The Stag was great. Ordered a sandwich each but so big could have shared and certainly did not need a bowl of chips. Did not mention on website but dog friendly in public bar. All the food that came out looked amazing so will definitely come back when we next visit Wagtail. Staff were very pleasant.”
