About Gary's

Gary's is a Chinese takeaway on North Street in Glenrothes, set up for collection and phone orders rather than dine-in. The kitchen covers a familiar Chinese takeaway range alongside fish and chips, giving the menu a wider chip-shop streak than the category label alone suggests. Orders go in by phone or at the counter, and the format is walk-in throughout opening hours. Beyond Glenrothes itself, delivery reaches the surrounding streets, so households across the town can be fed without leaving home. The offering pairs the core Chinese dishes with the chip-shop staples, holding two casual traditions under one roof for the neighbourhood's evening crowd.

Customer Review Summary

Reviews split sharply. Praise centres on tasty Chinese dishes with generous portions, and one first-time customer found the phone service lovely and the food on time. One reviewer called the fish and chips decent, while another liked a hot, well-spiced curry. Complaints are greasy dishes, thin oily satay sauce with no peanut taste, and one chilli the menu description omitted despite an allergy. Another describes small, soggy fish fillets.

“Wow this place has always had favorite customers, even the Lucky Date Restaurant that Gary served his time in, always had completely preferential treatment for people who'd served in Hong Kong and so were in some kind of insular clique who were treated like movie stars when visiting the restaurant. So a few days before I saw one such favorite customer getting a superb fish supper, big long fish fillets with a supreme crispy batter and the best potato chips I'd ever seen. I mean just the best fish supper and all over this guy, friendly, smiling, served by the cook himself not any you know temporary hired hand bystander. So I went in to get this fish supper that had cost the local hero £9.60. That's what I paid the same £9.60 but what I got wow! Two small, soft batter fillets of fish with a greenish appearance were laid out on the lid of a white polystyrene container, one much smaller than the other, and the potato chips in the container itself, you know all of poor shape and dried up, and not at a busy time, I was just one of two customers in there, it wasn't busy but there was one of their favorite people in there with his teenage daughter and he was talking away constantly at high volume, boasting about his life and upcoming holiday plans. This guy had stepped in front of me and slammed the entrance door in my face, he was a nasty piece of work but they were giving him their best service. I looked at this you know pathetic fish supper and the small, Scottish female assistant asked if that was okay for me so I looked in the heated place where they keep cooked battered fish fillets waiting and there was this single large fillet, all nicely turned out and I really wasn't happy but I'd complained in the past and Gary the owner, he's dangerous, a gossip and a troublemaker with all these favorite customers that think he's the bees and knees and are so defensive of any slight that he moans about to them and didn't have much choice but to take it but wish I'd got the cook to do me a fish supper just like the one seen days before. So when I got this fish supper outside in the car I found three small pieces of soggy battered fish that tasted like mushrooms, and it didn't digest well after. But I'd tried their Chinese stuff days before and found the curry nice and hot, very tasty too by a tall elderly Chinese cook not always there, but wonderfully spiced food. What a pity he was just there that one day. So even although I give two stars for a poor show, this place gives other favorite customers a fantastic dish and five stars all around. I never got that service and often wondered how I could but you know, 'The Lucky Date' was like that and I guess I was never one of the lucky ones that's all. I looked up the net and these small soggy fillets are known as cheaper and used in children's portions, so Gary was always quite nasty to some of his customers and more than decent to others. He never gave me big pieces of fish, always the smallest, thinnest pieces that he could find and the finely finished large pieces of golden battered fish in clear view of the counter, in that glass heated compartment, and if you complain about what they've given you Gary the owner, whose name appears as 'Shek' on the bill of sale, stops his little meek, decent guy act and becomes nasty at once threatening to call the police, he has a relative in the police who is the son of the Lucky Date restaurant owner, and I avoid the place because I don't get the best service and dishes served to me. Gary is not amenable and only a favorite group of customers get the best food on offer, no matter how nice you are to him. It would be expected that the prices being all the same, it's first come first serve, but it's not, there's a community favoritism thing and the Chinese food as well as the fish suppers are usually very poor, the worst locally, and the most expensive, unless you're part of this locally favorite clique of theirs who get absolute five star service and meals.”

“Ordered 3 Chinese dishes and they were not great. Too much grease. The satay sauces were terrible.... oily and thin with no peanut taste. My dish did not advertise chilli in the dish to which I have an allergy. Had to pick it all out b4 I could eat it. My son had meat with noodles. It was swimming in grease.”
