Quick info
About The Tasting Room
Opened in 2019 as the first of the owner's Exeter cafes, The Tasting Room is a coffee house and cafe at 204 Topsham Rd in Exeter. It is the UK home of SUNDAY-Collab coffee, served alongside a brunch menu that includes eggs royale and pancakes. Toasties and a counter of cakes and pastries fill out the rest of the offer, with a pistachio croissant among the baked goods. Dogs are welcome, which suits regulars who walk with a pet. A small book corner for children sits inside, giving younger visitors something to read while the table settles in.

Customer Review Summary
Warm, friendly staff come up in most reviews, and the food and drink earn specific praise: sausage rolls, a balsamic onion and avocado bagel, pancakes with fresh squeezed orange juice, and a matcha one reviewer ranks among the best they have tried. Coffee is also singled out, along with a smoothie, and one reviewer who came for the granola bowl found it good but heavy on jam. Several describe the food as fresh, quick and generous in portion, and a few stayed for hours to meet friends or study in a calm, cozy room. Criticism is less frequent but pointed. One diner found the poached eggs and bacon on sourdough dry and tasteless, the hollandaise on the eggs royale industrial tasting, and the pistachio croissant stale, all pricey for what arrived. Another visit had no food because the chef was out, the air con was off in the heat, and a drink was forgotten. One reviewer alleges a lowered hygiene rating and reports finding hair in food on an earlier visit. Dogs are welcomed, and one reviewer notes a little book corner for children.

“This was a random lucky find. The cafe is small but lovely. The staff were wonderful, polite and helpful there is a great selection of food and our breakfasts were lovely. I'd recommend the coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice and pancakes. The bathroom was thoughtfully stocked.”

“1 star to match the hygiene rating of this establishment. Why not display your food hygiene standards certificate in your window like every other business? Oh yes… because it’s recently been downgraded from a 3 to a 1, neither of which are acceptable. How can you allow your standards to be this low? I have previously found hair in my food and now it all makes sense. Do not eat here unless you wish to be highly likely to get food poisoning.”

“Food was very fresh and came out fast! The staff were lovely and welcoming towards me. The matcha was one of the best I’ve tried and will definitely be back!”

“Good coffee but no food available as the chef wasn't in. People complianed about the heat but were told by the staff that they couldn't turn the air con on (!). Also someone complained that they had forgotten their drink. Overall not a great experience, could be so much better if food was available, the air con was working and they didn't forget drinks.”
