About The Burrow

The Burrow is a cocktail bar in Edinburgh's Old Town, at 19 Blackfriars St, set below the 3 Blind Mice restaurant. An original Banksy artwork is on display in the bar, which gives anyone stopping in for a drink a reason to look around the room. The space is small, with a couch running along the wall and small tables, each with its own small chairs. Cocktails and whisky make up the drinks offer, and the bartender explains each cocktail and the inspiration behind it. The cocktail menu is shared with the pizza place upstairs, so pizza, including a veggie option, is available alongside a drink. A playlist runs at a low volume.

Customer Review Summary

Cocktails are the draw at this small bar, described by reviewers as creative, clever, and alcohol-forward, with several praising their taste and presentation. Diners also single out the gin selection and an interesting range of indie bottled whisky, and one enjoyed a veggie pizza. The bartender comes up repeatedly as helpful and friendly, and one visitor describes being told about each cocktail and the inspiration behind it. Reviewers call the room cosy and fun, with a Banksy original, low music, and a couch running around the wall, and several say it suits date nights or small groups. The main criticism comes from one early weekday visitor, who found the cocktail list limited and the same as the pizza restaurant upstairs, with many drinks unavailable, and called the one drink they had good but not impressive. Another notes that the fun presentation did not apply to every drink. One reviewer was pleased that staff were happy to make drinks off the menu.

“Had my birthday party here and had a wonderful time. Thank you so much to Emma for organising it and our fabulous bar staff Sam and Naomi. Fantastic cocktails, a really interesting selection of indie bottled whisky, great veggie pizza and the decor and atmosphere was heaps of fun. I'll definitely be back to drop in whenever I'm in the old town.”

“6 Stars!! Wauw. Wonderful complex cocktails. Great tastes. And sooo nicely served. A great creativity is behind this setup of cocktails. Of the 6 cocktail bars we visited during our Edinburgh stay, this place comes out on top. The bartender was great. Nice to talk to. Told us about each cocktail and the inspiration behind. He definitely made the visit great. The decor is real cozy with low music playing. A couch runs around the wall and small chairs are placed at each small table. Fun decor on the walls and stands. Definitely a cocktail bar to visit !!”

“This is such a great bar! It’s tucked away in Edinburgh’s Old Town, centrally located but cosy and feels special. The drinks menu is fantastic; interesting, fun and exciting to explore. The gin selection is great, and the cocktails soo clever and fun - and very alcohol-forward. You can tell that the menu has been developed with thought and care. The bartender was fantastic, gave good advice and knew his menu/products well. It’s nice to have someone be genuinely passionate about what they’re doing - it elevated the space. The decor of both the bar and toilets is immaculate. The playlist the night I visited was also elite.”

“What a beautiful spot! It checks every box that exists. The drinks are creative and served with a fun presentation. (Not every one) If you enjoy cocktails you should go here and give them 5 stars because it’s genuinely hard to find spaces like this in our modern world and folks should work hard to keep it around.”
