About Leonard’s Coffee House
Leonard's Coffee House is a coffee shop in Durham, on Back Silver St. The upstairs floor hosts live music events as part of Durham Fringe, so the building serves as a venue as well as a daytime cafe. The menu covers sandwiches and breakfast and brunch options, including a salmon bagel and sourdough toast. London Smog comes served in a pot, and the drinks list is built around lattes and flat whites. Dogs are welcome. The shop opens Wednesday to Sunday, daytime only, and closes on Mondays and Tuesdays. The decoration follows a vintage, home-made style.

Customer Review Summary
Sandwiches and breakfast plates draw the most praise, with reviewers calling them tasty and fresh, from a salmon bagel and sourdough toast with butter to a prawn and salmon sandwich. Close behind are the drinks: a chai latte with strong cinnamon, a rich London Smog served in a pot, and lattes and a flat white described as heavenly. Several reviewers like the home-like, vintage feel and the tucked-away spot, and one describes a guitar concert upstairs. Slow service is the recurring complaint. One reviewer says it took almost an hour for a simple egg breakfast, another says ordering and drinks both took ages on a quiet day, and a third blames a very small kitchen that ran out of some items. Others found the wait fine. Individual misses include burnt sausage and bacon, a chewy pancake, a waitress who ignored two requests, and a salmon filling described as only a slither. One reviewer who found the wait fine says two people in the small kitchen were turning out great food.

“Great coffee. I can't comment on the food as I didn't have any, but the menu was fantastic, exactly the type of brunch I usually look for (sourdough toast, avocado, poached eggs) and staff very friendly. In a secluded location I wouldn't have stumbled upon, I went looking following a recommendation from a lady at the church in the centre of Durham. I will be back if back in Durham. Thanks!”

“Went to a virtuoso guitarist concert (Maxim Yarushkin), part of Durham Fringe. It was held on the top floor, which isn't big, but sunny, fresh, cosy. The only distruction was people either unloading or loading something outside during the concert. Otherwise great. Looking forward to more gigs there!”

“Really nice food but it’s taking almost an hour to get a simple egg based breakfast. You can see the staff are trying their best but something isn’t working with the service times here. Management need to take a look at how to increase efficiency because they had plenty of staff and doing their best but all looked struggling.”

“I have only ever had amazing experiences here! Even through I no longer live in Durham, when I come back this is a must-go. I’ve been here by myself and with friends. The food, cakes and coffee have always been amazing and there is a reason it is so popular here! The quality and service are just fantastic!”

“A cosy cafe with delicious food options. Love their home-like, vintage vibe. Every decoration including those on the wall is so unique and home made like. There were indoor and outdoor seatings. It’s nice to sit outside if it’s a sunny day like today. The sandwiches were overall very tasty. The ingredients were fresh. We tried a few of them on the menu after a few visits. The Chai Latte was with strong cinnamon for those who love cinnamon. The London Smog was rich and flavourful. It came in a pot. 🫖 Their Tea Bag teas were TEA PIGS which I loved. 🥰 Prices were fair too. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼”
