Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the coffee and the cakes and scones, with the cortados described as smooth and rich and the flat white praised for its creamy texture. Close behind are the baked goods: the lemon thyme cake, the blueberry and matcha cake, a cheese scone that was light though a little mild, and scones with a cookie-like texture. The freshly squeezed orange juice, called sherbet-y, and an Earl Grey with a fresh aftertaste also earn mentions. Staff are described as friendly and smiling, and the side-alley spot is called a chill, comfortable place for a chat, with Pink Floyd playing. The caveats are specific. One reviewer found the matcha iced lattes incredibly weak on occasion, another wanted an extra shot for stronger coffee, and a third found most cakes contained nuts and the coffee not as good as before. One reviewer also reports watching staff stroke dogs and then prepare food, and dogs' faces on tables, and calls it unhygienic. The tucked-away entrance off the bridge is where reviewers say to look for the signs.

“Very nice place, so comfortable and friendly. Food was amazing. Sometimes…You should to be on a waiting list”

“Fantastic little cafe situated in the heart of Durham city centre. Lovely staff and a good selection of drinks, but an even better selection of cakes! The Blueberry and Matcha cake went down a treat! If you're like me, however, and like strong coffee, I recommend getting an extra shot. But on the whole, the coffee was good! It's Baristocracy, so you know it's good!”

“Popped into Flat White Cafe in Durham and really enjoyed it. Proper good coffee: the cortados were smooth, rich and tasty. The cakes are brilliant too. We went for the lemon thyme cake and it was beautifully moist, zesty and just delicious. Hit the spot perfectly.”

“Most of the cakes had nuts, almonds etc involved. Not allergic but am not too keen on nuts generally. Bakewell tart was fine though and coffee good but not as good as previously.”

“Rated food but because I had a coffee, not food... Very sweet coffee shop tucked off the main thoroughfare. Look out for the signs in the side passage opening off the bridge. Coffee was fantastic and the orange juice was freshly squeezed, very sherbet-y. Sweet and tart at once, super quality.”
