About Fifty Six Restaurant
Fifty Six Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant in Durham, at 56 North Rd, serving a Sichuan menu rather than British-style Chinese. A large share of the dishes are spicy, including cumin beef and dry wok brisket beef, so the kitchen suits diners who want heat. Non-spicy dishes sit alongside them, as do noodles, fried rice, Chinese dumplings and a clear broth fish soup. Portions are large and the dishes are suited to sharing. Cobra beer is on the drinks list. Colourful decorations fill the dining room, and the restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers come for authentic Sichuan cooking, with the cumin beef the dish one couple returned to repeatedly after moving away from Durham. Close behind are the dry wok brisket beef and wok fried spicy potatoes, along with the chilli oil, the chicken, the sweet and sour, and a clear broth fish soup with beef slices and tripe. Several note generous portions and dishes suited to sharing, and the place is described as popular with Chinese students and the Chinese community, with friendly, quick service. Reviewers say to expect spice rather than British Chinese standards. The complaints are specific. One takeaway order of prawn toast, special rice and chicken wings arrived greasy, with tasteless rice and old, hard meat. Another diner found the food greasy and salty, with fried potatoes in the stew and a Chinese Hamburger with little filling, and noted that most of the menu is spicy. One table had to chase a forgotten dish, and a first-time visitor ended up enjoying free dumplings on winter solstice day.

“I have just received a takeaway from here, I paid 36 pounds for prawn toast, special rice and 3 chicken wings delivered. The rice was the biggest let down, not only did it look completely different to the image on deliveroo, it was tasteless, the the little meat that was in it was old and rock hard. Prawn toast and wings were equally disappointing, greasy old crap. Do not order from here, it's a Saturday night your food should be fresh at the very least”

“Really amazing, authentic Chinese food! Our personal favourite is the cumin beef — we had it so many times when we were living in Durham, and after moving down south, we really missed it. We came back recently and it was just as delicious as we remembered. The flavours were spot on, and it brought back so many great memories. Highly recommend — such a great place for authentic Chinese food!”

“It is the 1st time I visited Durham and this restaurant. The colourful decorations are apparently targeted to young people. There are lots of dishes in the menu like spicy and non-spicy food, noodles, fried-rice and even Cobra beer. The portion is also surprisingly large. Food quality is very good with authentic tastes. The staff are very friendly, nice and helpful. Highly recommended to all Chinese food-lovers”

“Sichuan cuisine, is a style of Chinese cuisine originating from Sichuan province in southwestern China. Many of us know it for its “hot and spicy” reputation or a few of its most famous dishes, but that is only the beginning. Sichuanese cuisine is legendary in China for its sophistication and astounding diversity. Fifty Six Restaurant offers an amazing variety of various Sichuan dishes. A visit to Fifty Six is more than a meal, it’s an adventure for your imagination.”
