About Black Mamba

Black Mamba is a tapas restaurant in Dundee, at 141 Nethergate, built around small plates that take global twists on the tapas format. The menu includes Korean fried oyster mushrooms and pork and nduja sliders, and a Thai coconut prawn dish sits alongside them. Plates arrive in small portions, so tables order several dishes to share between them. A drinks list runs next to the food, with cocktails as well as beer and pints. The kitchen takes its flavours from several countries rather than one cuisine.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the Korean fried oyster mushrooms, called a favourite by one reviewer and simply to die for by another when paired with the bread and sriracha spread. Close behind are the Korean fried chicken, cod fritters, fries and asparagus, while the Thai coconut prawn is delicious to one reviewer and had undercooked prawns for another. Staff draw frequent praise as friendly and knowledgeable, with regular drink refills and fresh water brought without asking, and several call the food good value. The critical reviews describe a very different night: a pork nduja slider that was cold and tasteless or dry, a steak with unseasoned butter, soggy sriracha mushrooms, and a spicy margarita that was weak. One party was seated at a cramped high table by the door and told more than half the menu was unavailable. One reviewer says to book on graduation days, and another says to bring cash because card payments cannot include tips. In one case, a waiter acknowledged earlier complaints and took money off the bill without fuss.

“Very disappointing unfortunately . My partner had been a few months ago and raved about it so we decided to go together . The sriracha mushrooms I will never understand. Boiled soggy mushrooms you couldnt taste . Strange texture in a pool of overpowering sricha. The steak with butter had absolute no flavour . Not seasoned and I could swear the butter was more like flora margarine again not seasoned . The sliders ( pork and njudu) very basic , dry and little meat to roll ratio more like a bad party snack . The chicken tenders were tasty but again basic and could be crispier . The sauce that came with it was unbelievably bland . The only dish that was good was the Asparagus. My partner did mention before it was unreal so im not sure whats happened but it was genuinely one of the worst if not the worst weve had . The staff were great . There was a few things that weren't available. We were in a hurry to catch a train and the waiter was great and did mention there had been a good few complaints and took 50% off the bill without any kind of hassle . It would be hard to return as it was really a waste of money with alot of good restaurants in dundee .”

“First time in Dundee ever and Black Mamba offered two great dining experiences in two opposite atmospheric situations. Da welcome is great, so friendly and genuine. Da food menu proved so generously varied and appetising. ...Hey, we are talking tapas here! Da cocktail menu is equally exciting! Everything is delicious. 🙌🏻🎉😍 Just book your table imperatively on graduation days / to avoid disappointment. (!) It is a "must". Overall, two fabulous experiences to be repeated on a future visit!”

“I had a fantastic experience at Black Mamba last night! Food was delicious, featuring a great variety of dishes to choose from. What really stood out though was the phenomenal service. Staff checked on us regularly for drink refills and to ensure that everything was perfect. My only critique is that it’s a bit of a shame the system doesn’t allow you to leave tips for the wonderful stuff via card payments. Bring cash!”

“My partner and I decided to try Black Mamba after seeing how popular it is, but the experience was frustrating from start to finish. We booked in advance and were told we’d have a window seat, which we were happy about. However, when we arrived, we were placed right next to the door at a cramped high table that was clearly meant for drinks—not for having a proper meal, and barely suitable even for one person. Every time someone entered or left, we had to shuffle around to avoid being hit by the door. It was uncomfortable and poorly thought out. After this kept happening, we asked to change tables but were told nothing was available and were asked to come back in an hour—with no guarantee of a better table. We returned nearly an hour later and were finally seated properly, only for things to go downhill again. When we looked at the menu, we were told that more than half of it wasn’t available. This left very limited options, especially for vegetarian or protein-based dishes, and most of the popular items were unavailable. It made the menu feel pointless and not at all appetising. The food itself was just as disappointing. The pork nduja slider was cold and completely tasteless. The salt and pepper calamari felt like cheap, store-bought food. The Thai coconut prawn dish had a decent broth, but the prawns were undercooked. The bread with cheese and pomegranate was probably the only thing that was acceptable. The drinks didn’t redeem the experience either. We specifically asked for something spicy, and were given what was meant to be a spicy margarita—which was weak, unbalanced, and not even close to a proper margarita. The “Black Jam” cocktail was okay, but nothing memorable. Overall, this place is seriously overrated. Poor seating, limited menu availability, underwhelming food, and disappointing drinks. Definitely not worth the hype, and we left feeling very unsatisfied.”
