Quick info
About The Whalebone
The Whalebone sits on Bridge Street in Downham Market, a pub and restaurant in a building set back from the road with a garden on the premises. The kitchen runs a short menu of comfort plates that includes steak and ale pudding, veggie sausage and mash, and a cheesy tomato pasta. Drinks span Murphy's stout on tap and rose wine served straight from the pump. A smoking area sits by the entrance and a gambling machine is on site. Service runs on a walk-in basis with no booking taken.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to cheap prices and good value, with the on-pump rosé wine and a very big garden singled out as draws, and staff described as polite and lovely. Food draws the complaints: one diner says a child's cheesy tomato pasta resembled packet pasta, while another calls the steak and ale pudding sludge in overcooked pastry with gravy like wet mud.

“A lovely pub and the staff are polite and helpful. I was very disappointed with the meal I ordered for my daughter. The cheesy tomato pasta looks like it came out of some packet and just had hot water added to it (mugshots pasta) I’m guessing. I wasn’t expecting something top notch but that is terrible! A massive plate with a little dollop of this yellow looking stuff was presented to us from the member of staff. A small bowl of pasta with some sauce and a sprinkle of cheese would have cost no more than £1 to make for the child size portion! Weatherspoons need to do better!”

“Always love going here. Such great value. Great prices. Very big garden. Absolutely adore the on pump Rose wine. Only 1 negative. I think the smoking area should be further away from the entrance.”

“Absolutely fantastic meal lovely staff great price brilliant best value around.”

“Had a disappointing meal with my grandson jimmy bingle today. We enjoyed our steak and ale pudding and veggie sausage and mash. But the manager on shift (little man) refused my grandson a pint of Carling with his sausage and mash. He is 17 today and we came to celebrate his birthday. The steak and ale resembled that of sludge in a thin overcooked pastry. And the “gravy” was more like wet mud than gravy. However I will be returning as it is the only place my bus pass allows me to go that serves my drink of choice (Murphy’s stout) and access to a gambling machine”
