Quick info
About The Bitter End
The Bitter End is a pub in Cockermouth on Kirkgate, where a window beside the bar looks into the pub's own brewery. Local ales are on tap at the bar, so the beer is poured close to where it is made. The kitchen cooks familiar pub dishes, with Cumberland sausages served with chips, gravy or mash, and a steak and ale pie that comes with chips and veg. The chips are homemade. Wine is poured alongside the beer for those who prefer it. Walk-ins are accepted, and a car park at the back of the pub is free to use. Inside, the pub keeps a historic interior.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints focus on consistency and value. One reviewer found the Cumberland sausages dried out under a hot plate, with bland packet-tasting mash and thin gravy for a pricey, small portion. Another had chips that looked reheated, very hard and crunchy, with the steak and ale pie the one good part. A third, a returning local, said the vegan dishes shrank over three visits into mostly rice with little veg and overcooked, salty protein at meat-dish prices. Free parking behind the pub comes up too.

“This is our third visit. The first time our food was of good size and tasty. The second and third time it was very disappointing, much smaller amounts of the main food, plentiful rice to bulk out the dishes but virtually no vegetables and small, super over cooked and salty protein. Dishes eaten - all vegan options. They are at the same price point as meat dishes, poor effort, poor value for money very disappointing and as locals we will not eat there again,”

“Steak and Ale pie was nice however chips tasted and looked like they had been re heated. Very hard and extremely crunchy. Most of my daughter's look like scraps. Not many places open for food on a Monday night but if I were to visit again would rather have a Tesco meal deal. Cheaper and tastier.”

“A friendly atmosphere and good food 😋 Their own brewery can be seen through a window from the bar. There's a car park at the back of the pub.”

“Lovely pub with good beer and food. Staff were really friendly and made us feel very welcome. Nice having some different things on the menu compared to so many pubs.”

“A historic pub, the experience of our lunch was just fabulous! Every corner of the pub looked as if straight out of a story book. Lacal beer was a real treat and so was Cumberland sausages, fish and chips etc. We purchased a few cans of beer for the evening as well. One distinct advantage was that the pub has its own free parking lot right behind.”
